$31 Million Grant Announced to Upgrade Port of Baltimore’s Dundalk Terminal

The Port of Baltimore is set to receive a significant boost following the announcement of a $31 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Governor Wes Moore, alongside Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld and Maryland’s congressional delegation, shared the exciting news. This grant will be directed toward the much-needed modernization of Dundalk Terminal’s Berth 11, a critical area for handling heavy machinery—an area in which the Port of Baltimore leads all other U.S. ports.

The allocated funds will support the replacement of 597 feet of the wharf deck, as well as upgrading critical infrastructure. This includes improvements to drainage systems, utility connections, mooring equipment, and flood protection barriers. Such enhancements are essential for ensuring the terminal remains operational and efficient in the face of increasing demand and evolving environmental challenges.

As the third-largest port on the East Coast and ninth-largest in the United States, the Port of Baltimore plays a key role in driving both the local and national economy. These updates at Dundalk Terminal will not only improve the port’s capacity to handle heavy machinery but also ensure it remains competitive and prepared for future growth.

Governor Moore emphasized the importance of the project, stating that it positions Baltimore for continued expansion and success in the logistics and freight industries. The upgrades are expected to create a more resilient infrastructure, which is crucial as ports across the nation face growing concerns over aging facilities and climate-related vulnerabilities.

This investment comes at a critical time for the port, which has long been a vital hub for international trade. With this grant, the Port of Baltimore is well on its way to further solidifying its position as a key player in the maritime and logistics sectors, enhancing both regional economic growth and national competitiveness.
