HAREKET has completed the port handling and inland transportation of components for 36 wind turbines destined for the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 Wind Farm Project, marking a major heavy transport milestone for Oman’s renewable energy sector.
The operation moved turbine components from the Port of Duqm to the Nimr project site across a demanding 387 kilometre route. Among the cargo were 91 metre blades, the longest wind turbine blades ever transported by road in Oman.
The Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 development will have a combined generating capacity of 234 MW, making it Oman’s largest wind power project and one of the region’s most extensive renewable energy developments.

Record blades raise the transport challenge
Moving a wind turbine blade nearly as long as a football pitch is not simply a matter of placing it on a trailer and driving to the destination. Every junction, gradient, bridge, overhead obstruction and turning point can become a critical engineering consideration.
The 91 metre blades required specialised transport equipment designed to manage their length while maintaining stability throughout the journey. The route between Duqm and Nimr added another layer of complexity, stretching for 387 kilometres through terrain that demanded careful operational planning.
For project logistics teams, the challenge grows with every additional metre. Longer blades improve the energy capture potential of modern turbines, but they also create tighter turning requirements and greater exposure to wind during transportation.

Duqm serves as gateway for turbine components
The Port of Duqm acted as the entry point for the project cargo before the components began their inland journey to Nimr.
Port operations for large wind turbine packages typically involve coordinated discharge, temporary storage, inspection and transfer to specialised road transport systems. Sequencing is essential because turbine components must leave the port in an order that supports installation schedules at the project site.

The movement of components for 36 turbines would have required repeated journeys along the same corridor, with each convoy facing similar restrictions and route conditions. A delay involving one blade or tower section can affect the wider delivery sequence, much like a missing piece can hold up an entire assembly line.
Logistics supports Oman’s energy transition
The Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 wind farms form part of Oman’s wider effort to increase renewable electricity generation and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

Once operational, the two projects will provide 234 MW of combined capacity. Their scale also illustrates how the energy transition is creating demand beyond turbine manufacturing and construction. Ports, heavy transport operators, route surveyors and specialised equipment providers all play a direct role in bringing renewable projects into operation.
