The M/V Carmen has successfully departed the Port of Baltimore today. This achievement follows the concerted efforts of local, regional, and state authorities to establish a temporary deep draft channel, facilitating the vessel’s departure.
Baltimore, MD, April 25, 2024 – The M/V Carmen, which had been held at the port since March 26 due to the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, was assisted by tugboats as it left the berth after 14:00 EDT. Navigating safely through the temporary waterway, the vessel is now en route to Manzanillo, Panama. Once cargo operations are completed at the port, the vessel will resume its regular trade route, rejoining the active fleet.
Salvage operations in Baltimore are ongoing, and vessel transits remain restricted to designated channels. The number of transits is regulated and further limited by the temporary timeframe currently in effect.
Assessing the practicality and viability of vessel entry during this restricted transit window, there remains optimism for the full reopening of the channel according to schedule.
Baltimore Carmen, a representative for Wallenius Wilhelmsen, expressed condolences to the families affected by the bridge collapse. They also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of authorities, stakeholders, partners, and the Baltimore community in overcoming the challenges posed by the incident.
Having been a key hub for Wallenius Wilhelmsen for many years, the company expressed immense appreciation for the support of the local Baltimore community and expressed pride in being part of it.
This successful departure marks a milestone in the ongoing recovery efforts following the bridge collapse and underscores the resilience of maritime logistics in the face of challenges.
