ABS Honors Dr. James S. C. Chao with Inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award

In a moment that marked both history and legacy, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) presented its first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. James S. C. Chao, the Founder and Chairman of the Foremost Group, at the 163rd ABS Annual Members Meeting in New York.

This recognition highlights more than six decades of Dr. Chao’s impact on the global shipping industry. Known for founding the Foremost Group alongside his late wife, Ruth Mulan Chu Chao, in 1964, Dr. Chao has led the company with a steady compass set on the principles of honor, integrity, and performance—values that have stood the test of time through shifting tides in global trade.

ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki personally presented the award, emphasizing the moral compass Dr. Chao has provided to the industry. “Dr. Chao not only has a remarkable legacy of achievement but also personifies the finest values of our industry,” said Wiernicki. He underscored Chao’s philosophy of contributing to society while protecting the environment—principles that remain relevant as the maritime sector faces growing calls for sustainability and ethical leadership.

Accepting the award in person, Dr. Chao reflected on the pillars that have guided his life and career. “Foremost Group has been governed by three key principles since its founding more than 60 years ago: honor, integrity, and performance,” he said. He acknowledged the collective effort behind the company’s success, crediting his family, alma mater, colleagues, and faith.

I am grateful to everyone who made this success possible… and the Lord, whose grace grants me everything I have today,” said Chao, adding, “I want to thank the American Bureau of Shipping for this recognition and, more importantly, for setting the standards of excellence for our entire industry.

Dr. Chao’s journey from seafarer to shipping magnate offers a powerful narrative of resilience and ethical leadership. The award not only honors his personal story, but also sends a broader message about the kind of leadership the maritime sector continues to value—quiet, principled, and deeply rooted in purpose.
