In a notable step toward achieving zero-carbon shipping, ABS and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on groundbreaking marine technologies. The agreement, signed during Gastech 2024, marks a significant partnership aimed at the development and certification of next-generation, zero-carbon ships.
This MOU, titled “Cooperation on the Advanced Zero-Carbon Ships,” sets its sights on three key areas of technological advancement. First, it focuses on a new LNG cargo handling system designed to reduce environmental impact. This system will utilize a full re-liquefaction method, effectively curbing boil-off gas (BOG) emissions from LNG carriers. The second focal point is the integration of an advanced ammonia fuel supply system. This system includes pressure control features, making it suitable for large commercial vessels, enhancing safety and efficiency in handling alternative fuels. Lastly, the MOU prioritizes an innovative cold ammonia re-liquefaction system that promises to boost overall efficiency by reducing power consumption.
During the signing ceremony, Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ABS, emphasized the importance of collaboration to address the industry’s decarbonization challenges. “To help safely deliver the rapid technological advances our industry needs, collaboration will be essential. ABS is proud to expand our relationship with HD KSOE, and we look forward to working together on innovative concepts to optimize and enhance next-generation vessels,” he said.
This sentiment was echoed by Sung Young-jae, Vice President and Research Director of HD KSOE’s Decarbonization Research Lab, who highlighted the long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions for future gas carriers and zero-carbon fuel ships. Both companies are committed to advancing the maritime industry’s sustainability efforts, and this MOU is a testament to their forward-thinking approach.
ABS, known for its extensive decarbonization solutions and expertise in the offshore and maritime sectors, is playing a crucial role in driving the shift toward greener shipping. By combining their technical knowledge and customized approaches, ABS and HD KSOE are paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in maritime transportation.
