(HOUSTON) In a pivotal move for the maritime sector, ABS has released its first-ever advisory dedicated to ammonia bunkering, setting a new standard for the industry. The “ABS Ammonia Bunkering: Technical and Operational Advisory” offers a comprehensive look into the complexities of using ammonia as a marine fuel, providing crucial insights for ensuring safety and efficiency in bunkering operations.
Ammonia, touted for its potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions, has emerged as a promising alternative fuel. Yet, its hazardous nature makes safety paramount. The advisory addresses how to handle ammonia safely whether it’s being transported by truck, ship, or stored at land terminals. This detailed guidance is designed to help ship owners, operators, designers, shipyards, ammonia suppliers, and port authorities navigate the unique challenges posed by ammonia bunkering.
John McDonald, ABS President and COO, emphasized the significance of this new advisory. “ABS has been at the forefront of ammonia as a marine fuel, and this advisory represents a critical step forward. We are sharing our extensive knowledge on ammonia’s maritime application to support various stakeholders in overcoming the new challenges associated with its use,” McDonald explained.
The advisory delves into essential areas including ammonia bunkering design, operational procedures, risk assessment, dispersion analysis, safety protocols, and necessary training. With these guidelines, ABS aims to bolster industry readiness for ammonia bunkering, paving the way for safer and more sustainable maritime operations.
