Shanghai, China—A historic moment unfolded on November 29, 2024, as the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Jiangnan Shipyard, and leading classification society DNV celebrated the delivery of Al Shelila, China’s first large-scale Mark III Flex LNG carrier. The 175,000-cbm vessel, part of a six-ship project, represents a leap in maritime innovation, showcasing cutting-edge efficiency and environmental features that mark a new era for the Chinese shipbuilding industry.
The Al Shelila is equipped with a host of advanced technologies aimed at maximizing operational performance while minimizing environmental impact. Among its standout features are twin WinGD 5X72DF-2.1 engines with Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER) to curtail methane slip and enhance fuel efficiency, the GTT Mark III Flex membrane containment system boasting an ultra-low boil-off rate of 0.085% per day, and a twin-skeg hull design paired with high-efficiency propellers. Additionally, the ship’s Jiangnan Intelligent Ship System (JNIS) allows for real-time energy optimization, reflecting the growing integration of digital solutions in maritime logistics.
At the ceremony, Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics and Services, expressed pride in Al Shelila, which he described as embodying “strength and grace” in its design. Al Masabi emphasized the significance of ADNOC’s expanding LNG fleet in meeting escalating global energy demands while strengthening UAE-China ties. His remarks underscored the symbolism of the vessel’s name, derived from Arabic, connecting modern innovation to a legacy of maritime heritage.
Lin Ou, Chairman of Jiangnan Shipyard, celebrated the milestone achievement, highlighting the shipyard’s ability to deliver this state-of-the-art LNG carrier two months ahead of schedule. “This project demonstrates our comprehensive shipbuilding expertise and reinforces our position as a leader in constructing gas carriers,” he stated. Lin also reaffirmed Jiangnan’s commitment to delivering subsequent vessels on time and to the highest standards, further deepening their partnership with ADNOC.
DNV’s CEO for Maritime, Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, praised the successful collaboration between all stakeholders, citing the technical complexity and meticulous planning required for the project. Norbert Kray, Regional Manager for Maritime Greater China at DNV, echoed the sentiment, calling the achievement a “fantastic milestone” that exemplifies the potential of Chinese shipyards in the rapidly growing LNG carrier market.
DNV has played a pivotal role in helping Chinese shipyards transition into alternative fuel markets. Their establishment of a Gas Carrier and Alternative Fuels Expert Team in Shanghai in 2022 was a strategic move to bolster the technical capabilities required for projects like Al Shelila. This ongoing collaboration is paving the way for a brighter future in energy-efficient and environmentally conscious maritime solutions.
