Low River Levels Put Critical Energy Cargo at Risk

When WEG S.A. needed to move three oversized transformers through the Amazon during one of the region’s harshest dry periods, the company faced a logistics challenge where timing mattered as much as engineering. The cargo weighed a combined 635 tons and was destined for Brazil’s R$5.8 billion Azulão gas field project, a development expected to generate 950 MW of power.

The route stretched from Betim in Minas Gerais to Silves in the Amazonas region. On paper, the operation relied on road, sea, and river transport. In reality, every stage depended on whether the Amazon’s water levels would cooperate.

Would a delayed barge movement stall a major energy project? That possibility forced planners to rethink every transfer point and navigational detail.

Multi Modal Planning Became the Difference

Maersk Project Logistics conducted feasibility studies before the first truck left WEG’s facility. Three specialised heavy haul trucks transported the transformers, while another 21 trucks carried 94 accessory volumes to Itaguaí’s Sepetiba Port.

Cargo consolidation at the port became a critical control point before shipment north to Outeiro Port in Belém do Pará. From there, the operation entered its most unpredictable phase.

River navigation during the Amazon dry season can shift from manageable to impossible within days. Draft restrictions and fluctuating depths forced Maersk teams to conduct continuous navigability assessments before approving barge deployment toward Silves.

The operation also demanded extreme care in cargo handling. The transformers measured up to 965 centimetres long and more than 500 centimetres high, leaving little margin for operational error during loading and discharge.

Azulão Project Added Pressure to Deliver on Schedule

The transformers are tied directly to the Azulão gas field expansion, one of Brazil’s most significant energy investments currently under development. Any delay could have affected installation schedules and downstream power generation targets.

Maersk and WEG ultimately completed the move without reported cargo damage or delivery disruption, reinforcing the growing role of project logistics providers in supporting large scale energy infrastructure across remote regions.
