When it comes to moving colossal pieces of machinery, precision is everything. ANDRITZ, a global leader in technology for industrial processes, has proven this yet again with the recent shipment of two of the world’s largest DD-Washers to a new pulp mill. Built at the company’s Savonlinna facility in Finland, these drum displacer washers are engineering marvels—and transporting them required an equally impressive logistical feat.

The shipment itself was a masterclass in coordination. Each washer, comprised of ten separate pieces, included a massive drum measuring 5.5 meters in diameter and 11 meters in length. Moving such oversized components isn’t as simple as loading them onto a truck and calling it a day. Specialized trailers were needed for land transport, and the ocean voyage was meticulously planned to ensure the delicate cargo arrived intact. It’s no exaggeration to say that every step of the journey was calculated down to the millimeter.

Tiina Muona, Vice President of Logistics for ANDRITZ Pulp & Paper, put it best when she described the operation: “Handling oversized loads like this requires detailed planning and expertise. Our logistics team is dedicated to delivering tailored, efficient solutions, no matter what the challenge.” That dedication was on full display here, as the successful delivery underscores the team’s ability to handle complexity with ease.
These DD-Washers aren’t just big; they’re also critical to the future of sustainable pulp production. As part of ANDRITZ’s fiberline portfolio, the washers help streamline the pulp-making process, enhancing both efficiency and sustainability. With over 400 installations already in place worldwide, ANDRITZ has solidified its reputation as a pioneer in the industry.
