APM Terminals Callao has reported a substantial 15% year-over-year increase in import volumes during the first half of the year. This surge, covering a diverse range of products like wheat, corn, steel coils, and heavy machinery, highlights the terminal’s rising significance in international trade.
With 780 vessels docking at Callao’s Multipurpose North Terminal since January, the terminal’s capacity and efficiency are clearly meeting growing demand. This uptick in vessel calls underscores the vital role APM Terminals Callao plays as Peru’s largest port, facilitating the smooth flow of global commerce. The boost in activity not only reflects increased demand but also showcases the terminal’s ability to adapt and scale up its operations effectively.
One of the key drivers behind this growth is the terminal’s commitment to continuous improvement. APM Terminals Callao has managed to increase the speed of its containerized cargo operations by 11%, a crucial enhancement that benefits the entire logistics chain. Faster operations mean shipping lines can gain valuable sailing time, ultimately leading to cost reductions—a critical factor in today’s competitive shipping environment.
The terminal’s ongoing modernization project, part of the larger Multipurpose North Terminal Modernization Project, has been instrumental in achieving these results. Fernando Fauche, Commercial Director at APM Terminals Callao, emphasized the importance of these improvements, stating, “APM Terminals Callao remains committed to efficiency and to the development of the Callao Multipurpose North Terminal. We will continue to implement technological and operational improvements to further reduce unloading times and increase our capacity to handle higher cargo volumes.”
This modernization effort has also expanded the terminal’s ability to handle a variety of cargo types, from solid bulk like wheat and corn to breakbulk construction materials such as steel and cement. The terminal’s versatility extends to the automotive sector, where imports of heavy machinery have surged by 30% compared to the same period last year.
In addition to handling imports, APM Terminals Callao is well-equipped to support the country’s growing agricultural exports. With specialized services and facilities for refrigerated goods, the terminal is poised to become a strategic hub for agro-exports in Peru. This is particularly important as the demand for these exports continues to rise, cementing the terminal’s position as a crucial node in the global supply chain.
Fauche concluded by reiterating the terminal’s commitment to maintaining high standards of efficiency and service, ensuring that APM Terminals Callao remains a leader in the maritime trade sector.
