Aquaterra Energy Clinches Major Well Intervention Deal with Intrepid Energy in Nigeria

UK-based offshore engineering firm Aquaterra Energy has secured a multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract with Nigerian operator Intrepid Energy Limited to deliver a tailored subsea well intervention equipment package aimed at boosting production in the region.

The deal centers on providing a complete seabed-to-surface intervention system designed to support operations across mature oil wells in Nigeria. This includes a lightweight 7-3/8” well access solution specifically engineered for deployment from jack-ups and lift boats—a move expected to significantly cut costs while maintaining safe and efficient performance. By avoiding the use of floating vessels, the solution presents a more practical and economical approach for field operations in shallow waters.

Included in the contract are key components like Aquaterra Energy’s TRT tieback tooling, offering both production bore and annular access, along with an ISO 13628-7 qualified open water intervention riser equipped with an integrated tensioning system. The system also features a lightweight well pressure control setup, streamlining the entire well intervention process.

Andrew McDowell, Delivery Director at Aquaterra Energy, emphasized the project’s practical impact. “Our expertise in offshore engineering allows us to develop tailored intervention solutions that address the operational challenges of subsea well access. This system has been engineered for efficiency, ease of deployment, and safety, helping IEL optimise intervention activities across Nigeria while reducing costs,” he said.

Beyond hardware, Aquaterra Energy will also provide long-term engineering support, ensuring continuous offshore service throughout the life of the project. A dedicated engineering team will remain engaged over multiple years, reinforcing operational reliability and offering technical oversight in the field.

Engr Seun Alonge, CEO at Intrepid Energy Limited, described the collaboration as a strategic move. “Working with Aquaterra Energy marks a significant step forward for our intervention operations in Nigeria. Their specialised technology enhances our ability to execute intervention programmes efficiently, maximising performance across our assets,” he stated.

The partnership is not only focused on efficiency but also reflects a shared understanding of local conditions. With Nigeria’s offshore fields presenting logistical and operational challenges, the ability to deliver effective intervention without relying on high-cost vessels is a critical advantage.

George Morrison, CEO at Aquaterra Energy, highlighted the broader significance: “Delivering reliable and efficient well access solutions for shallow water subsea operations is central to how we support offshore operators. This collaboration with IEL reinforces our commitment to providing cutting-edge engineering solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs.”

This project places Aquaterra Energy at the forefront of intervention support across West Africa, a region playing an increasingly pivotal role in global offshore oil production.
