Atlas Air Expands at MIA with New 250,000-Square-Foot Cargo Gateway

Atlas Air Worldwide has launched a major expansion at Miami International Airport (MIA), relocating to a cutting-edge, 250,000-square-foot cargo facility designed to improve operational control, speed, and cargo handling precision.

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. announced the opening of its new Miami Operations Gateway, reinforcing its role as the largest cargo operator at MIA. Handling over 500,000 tons of freight annually, the company’s move into this strategically located facility is expected to increase efficiency, streamline processes, and meet growing demand for time-sensitive cargo flows between South America, Asia, and Europe.

The newly occupied site, situated along the airport perimeter, allows Atlas Air to oversee all warehouse functions directly, eliminating reliance on third-party handlers. This facility includes the largest on-airport cooler in North America — a 124,000-square-foot temperature-controlled warehouse with direct ramp access — aimed at improving service for perishables and pharmaceuticals.

“As the largest freight operator at MIA, this expansion of our operations will add value to our customers globally and position us for continued success,” said Michael Steen, Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Air Worldwide. “We have unmatched network capabilities to support growing markets and the high-volume trade lanes connecting MIA and South America to Asia and Europe.”

The new gateway integrates warehouse, ramp, and aircraft parking in one site, providing faster turnarounds and improved scheduling flexibility. For customers with specialized logistics needs — including high-value perishables, healthcare supplies, and pharmaceuticals — the facility allows Atlas to manage cargo flow from tarmac to temperature control with reduced transit times.

Miami International Airport ranks among the world’s top 10 cargo airports by volume, making it a critical hub in the company’s global operations. The new site not only consolidates import and export operations, but also positions Atlas Air to scale with future cargo growth across the Americas and beyond.

Adjacent to key MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) providers, the location supports quicker service cycles for aircraft, which will help minimize ground time and boost fleet availability. For an airline operating one of the world’s largest fleets of 747 freighters, efficiency on the ground is a core operational priority.

The company’s deeper investment in Miami also signals a commitment to local employment and infrastructure. Currently, Atlas employs close to 800 individuals across Florida, and through indirect logistics support, generates work for thousands more.

Beyond its business operations, Atlas Air Worldwide is engaged in several community-focused initiatives throughout Miami-Dade County. These include partnerships with the Liberty City Optimists Club, which offers structured programs for children and teens, and the WOW Center, which serves adults with developmental disabilities. The company also sponsors events like the Hometown Heroes Parade and Festival to honor first responders in the region.

Alongside its expanded cargo facility, Atlas maintains a Flight Training Center and Commercial Marketing office in Miami, underscoring its long-term commitment to Southeast Florida as both a logistics and corporate hub.

As the cargo industry adapts to shifting trade flows, especially between Latin America and Asia, strategic investments like the Miami Operations Gateway offer an infrastructure solution built for flexibility, control, and precision in an increasingly complex global supply chain.
