Bluestone Secures Contract for Prysmian’s New Cable-Laying Vessels

The Bluestone Group has clinched a significant contract for the plan approval and site supervision of two cutting-edge cable-laying vessels commissioned by Prysmian, a leading player in the energy and telecom cable systems sector. Prysmian’s ambitious €350 million investment aims to bolster its cable-laying fleet to support the global power grid upgrade for energy transition initiatives.

Bluestone, renowned for its maritime technical services expertise, is already supervising the construction of Monna Lisa, another cable-laying vessel for Prysmian. The newly secured contract underscores Bluestone’s proficiency in newbuilding supervision and its commitment to offshore renewables.

The first vessel, a refinement of Prysmian’s existing Monna Lisa, is being constructed by VARD Group, a subsidiary of Fincantieri Group. Measuring approximately 190 meters in length and 34 meters in breadth, it will boast three carousels and cutting-edge cable installation solutions, positioning itself among the industry’s top cable-loading capacity vessels with over 19,000 tons of cable. Expected to be operational by early 2027, this vessel promises enhanced efficiency and productivity in submarine project execution.

The second vessel, an evolution of Prysmian’s Ulisse class, will measure approximately 167 meters in length and 40 meters in breadth, equipped with carousels capable of loading up to 10,000 tonnes of cable. Featuring state-of-the-art DP2 positioning and seakeeping systems, along with an eight-point mooring system, it will excel in shallow-water cable laying and burial installation, even in challenging environmental conditions. Scheduled for operation by the first half of 2025, this vessel embodies Prysmian’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Both vessels will prioritize environmental sustainability, equipped with high-voltage shore connection systems for clean energy during loading operations, diesel generators suitable for biodiesel blends, and battery hybrid systems for the deep-water vessel. Bluestone will deploy two site teams for supervision, backed by dedicated plan approval experts and project management resources, utilizing proprietary software to ensure efficient project management and seamless communication between stakeholders.

Matteo Di Maio, Director at Bluestone, expressed gratitude for Prysmian’s trust, highlighting the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge assets and leverage Bluestone’s extensive experience in newbuilding supervision and offshore renewables. This partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to excellence and sustainability, setting a benchmark for future collaborations in the maritime industry.
