Boluda Maritime Terminals Tenerife is stepping up its game with a new order for four hybrid Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, aiming to enhance container handling efficiency at the Port of Tenerife. The deal, signed in December 2024, underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable operations and cutting-edge technology.

The Port of Tenerife is a critical gateway for trade between Africa, the Americas, and Europe. As an independent port operator, Boluda Maritime Terminals plays a key role in maintaining the flow of goods through the Canary Islands. With these new hybrid cranes, the company is not only improving operational efficiency but also reducing its environmental impact—a move that aligns with the broader industry trend toward greener logistics solutions.
Why hybrid cranes? It all boils down to performance and eco-efficiency. After a thorough review of fuel consumption data, Boluda found that Konecranes’ hybrid drive technology offered the best balance between power and sustainability. “Konecranes hybrid drive technology provides the perfect balance of performance and environmental responsibility. The Smart Features also contribute to more efficient container handling and enhanced safety,” explains Gonzalo Calero Gómez, CEO of Boluda Maritime Terminals.
These four cranes will join two existing Konecranes RTGs, which have been in service since 2007. The longevity and reliability of the older machines played a major role in Boluda’s decision to stick with the brand. But it’s not just about durability—it’s also about innovation. The new RTGs come equipped with a suite of advanced Smart Features, including Auto-Steering, Auto-TOS Positioning, Auto-Positioning, Stack Collision Prevention, and Truck Lift Prevention. These capabilities will streamline operations and bolster safety protocols at the terminal.
For Konecranes, this deal is another step toward a more sustainable future. “We look forward to supporting Boluda’s journey to zero tailpipe emission operations. This investment is further evidence of growing demand for hybrid solutions in container handling and underscores Konecranes’ strength in this domain,” says Darryn Scheepers, EMEA Sales Director at Konecranes Port Solutions.
The investment aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting initiative—a vision focused on increasing the positive environmental impact of their products while reducing customers’ carbon footprints. Through a mix of eco-optimized diesel drives, hybrid systems, and fully electric fleets, the company is pushing the boundaries of sustainable port operations.
As global logistics face increasing pressure to decarbonize, investments like this one from Boluda Maritime Terminals Tenerife highlight how major players are embracing innovation to stay ahead. With the addition of these advanced hybrid cranes, the Port of Tenerife is well-positioned to maintain its role as a crucial hub for international trade while moving toward a cleaner, more efficient future.
