BorWin Gamma Stands Ready in UAE

Drydocks World – Dubai has completed the topside for the 900MW BorWin gamma HVDC platform, which will soon sail to its offshore site in the German part of the North Sea, where it is expected to arrive mid-September.

TenneT ordered the HVDC platform for its BorWin3 offshore grid connection project in 2014, from a consortium comprising Petrofac and Siemens, with Siemens in charge of supplying the complete HVDC converter technology and main electrical equipment, and Petrofac responsible for the complete engineering, construction and offshore installation of the platform.

Petrofac subsequently awarded the contract for fabrication, commissioning and load-out of the topside to Drydocks World, which started building the BorWin gamma HVDC platform the same year.

In the final stages of the project, Drydocks World carried out a mega jacking and load-out of the BorWin Gamma topside, completing one of the heaviest and biggest jacking lifts done in the Middle East, according to a press release from the Government of Dubai.

The topside will be shipped from Dubai to the North Sea site on a heavy lift vessel via the Suez Canal and will be put on top of its jacket foundation that was installed in May.

When operational, BorWin gamma will convert the alternating current produced by offshore wind turbines to direct current before transmitting it onshore to the German national grid via a 160-kilometer cable link.

The commissioning of the BorWin3 grid connection is expected in 2019.
