Boskalis and Van Oord Complete Major Dredging Project in Walvis Bay

Boskalis and Van Oord have successfully wrapped up an extensive dredging operation in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The joint venture deepened the port’s 10-kilometer access channel from -14.4 to -16.8 meters and widened it from 130 to 200 meters, significantly enhancing its capacity. Additionally, the harbor basin was dredged to a depth of -16.3 meters and expanded by over 400 meters.

The project was carried out using the trailing suction hopper dredgers Gateway and Vox Alexia, both of which played a key role in reshaping the port’s maritime infrastructure. Walvis Bay, a crucial gateway for regional trade, now boasts improved navigability, accommodating larger vessels and increasing operational efficiency.

One of the biggest hurdles was the presence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the dredged sediment, a toxic gas that posed serious safety risks. To address this challenge, extensive precautionary measures were implemented before the project commenced. The vessels underwent modifications, including the installation of specialized H2S filters and multiple sensors to monitor air quality. Crew members received thorough training on H2S safety protocols, ensuring they could detect and respond to any gas presence in real-time.

Beyond the vessels, additional sensors were installed across the port’s quays to provide early warnings to workers and port users if hydrogen sulfide levels rose. These stringent safety measures ensured that the project was completed on time and without any safety incidents.

The completion of this dredging work marks a significant upgrade for Walvis Bay, reinforcing its role as a strategic hub for trade and logistics. With deeper waters and an expanded harbor, the port is better positioned to handle growing cargo volumes and larger ships, further strengthening Namibia’s maritime infrastructure.
