With over 14 million containers passing through annually, Malaysia’s Port Klang is one of the world’s top 11 busiest container ports. Ensuring smooth access to this critical hub is paramount for both Malaysian and international trade.

In a bid to maintain the necessary depth for shipping lanes, Boskalis has deployed two trailing suction hopper dredgers—Fairway and Shoreway—to clear sediment and sustain navigability. The collaboration between these vessels ensures that both deep and shallow areas remain accessible, supporting the port’s non-stop flow of cargo and trade.
The Fairway, a mega hopper dredger, was tasked with clearing large volumes of sediment from the deeper sections of the port. Its high-capacity dredging capabilities made quick work of the accumulated deposits, preventing disruptions in vessel movements. With the deeper areas cleared, the focus has now shifted to the shallower zones, where the Shoreway, a smaller and more agile dredger, is currently operating. Its maneuverability allows it to reach areas that are typically more challenging, ensuring the entire port remains at optimal depth for safe navigation.

Port Klang serves as a vital artery for Malaysia’s economy, handling vast amounts of cargo daily. Any depth-related disruptions could lead to delays, congestion, and increased operational costs for shipping lines and businesses relying on timely deliveries. Dredging operations like these play a crucial role in facilitating seamless trade, keeping the global supply chain in motion.
Boskalis’ commitment to maintaining critical waterways is evident in its continued operations at major ports worldwide. This latest project at Port Klang exemplifies the company’s expertise in maritime infrastructure, reinforcing its role in supporting global commerce. As container volumes continue to rise, proactive dredging efforts will remain essential in keeping one of Southeast Asia’s busiest ports fully operational.
