Boskalis Introduces Industry-Leading 45,500 MT Subsea Rock Installation Vessel

Royal Boskalis B.V. (Boskalis) has unveiled the latest addition to its growing fleet: the ‘Windpiper,’ a revolutionary subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel boasting an unmatched cargo capacity of 45,500 metric tons. With this new vessel, Boskalis cements its position as the leader in the SRI sector, doubling its capacity and leaving competitors in its wake. This cutting-edge vessel is slated for delivery in early 2026, with initial projects planned in Northwest Europe, primarily targeting the offshore wind sector and supporting the ongoing energy transition.

The ‘Windpiper’ is not merely a new addition but a transformative one. Developed through the conversion of a modern vessel under Boskalis’ meticulous guidance, the ‘Windpiper’ is designed to tackle the demanding needs of offshore construction. Measuring an impressive 227 meters in length and 40 meters wide, the vessel packs over 31,000 kW of installed power. Key features include a moonpool and an inclined fall pipe system, which are vital for laying protective rock around offshore wind turbine foundations—a growing need as the offshore wind industry expands.

Boskalis has spared no detail in ensuring the vessel’s versatility and efficiency. With seven thrusters and DP2 certification, the ‘Windpiper’ is primed to deliver optimal performance in challenging offshore environments. Its design emphasizes not just capacity but efficiency, accommodating two large cargo holds. This ensures fewer trips for projects involving significant transit distances, such as those on the North American East Coast, the Baltic Sea, and the Southern North Sea. Fewer trips mean reduced emissions and cost savings—factors that resonate strongly with clients and environmental advocates alike.

The ‘Windpiper’ also prioritizes crew and client comfort, featuring over 100 single-occupancy cabins to house onboard teams and client representatives. By seamlessly integrating utility and comfort, the vessel sets a new standard in SRI operations.

Boskalis’ decision to convert an existing hull reflects its commitment to sustainability and innovation. This strategy extends the life of vessels while accelerating delivery timelines, a critical advantage in today’s rapidly evolving energy markets. The introduction of the ‘Windpiper’ not only showcases Boskalis’ engineering prowess but also its dedication to meeting growing client demands with a focus on safety and environmental responsibility.
