Buss Terminal Eemshaven completed an upgrade to its heavy lift quay at Julianahaven in the Netherlands, doubling the facility’s capacity to handle offshore wind projects at a time when European turbine installation activity is accelerating.
The reinforced quay now carries a load bearing capacity of 40 tonnes per square metre, enabling the terminal to receive heavy lift vessels used for loading and unloading wind turbine components. The upgrade allows the terminal to support up to two offshore wind farm projects simultaneously, according to the operator.
Quay and storage capacity grow
The work was carried out under the WINdQUAY project, which aimed to give the terminal greater flexibility in servicing installation vessels. Buss Ports, the parent company of the terminal operator, announced the completion in 2025. It followed an earlier expansion that added heavy-duty storage area and additional quay access, also dedicated to offshore wind logistics.
Ground improvements and structural reinforcement of the quay wall were central to the upgrade. The terminal sits in Eemshaven, a port in the northern Netherlands that serves as a staging hub for wind farms in the North Sea and surrounding waters.
EU co funding backs project
The WINdQUAY project received co funding from the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). Construction partners included Groningen Seaports, BAM, Elzinga, Witteveen+Bos, InVra plus and in2Dredging.
The expansion positions Eemshaven to capture a larger share of Europe’s offshore wind installation pipeline as governments push to meet renewable energy targets. Terminal capacity has been a recurring bottleneck in the sector, with quay availability and load bearing limits constraining project timelines at several North Sea ports.
Sector watches port readiness
For carriers, project logistics providers and turbine manufacturers, the added capacity at Eemshaven offers an alternative to congested marshalling ports along the North Sea coast. The ability to run parallel projects reduces scheduling risk for developers and installation contractors managing tight weather windows.
The upgrade reflects a broader trend of European port operators investing in infrastructure to keep pace with the offshore wind buildout across the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Atlantic corridors.
