Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has secured full ownership of the Morecambe offshore wind project, a 480MW fixed-bottom development located 30km off England’s Lancashire coast. The acquisition, made through CIP’s Copenhagen Infrastructure V (CI V) fund, was finalized in a transaction with COBRA Group and Flotation Energy, the latter owned by TEPCO Renewable Power, Inc. While financial terms remain undisclosed, Flotation Energy will continue supporting the project as a development partner.
A Strategic Offshore Wind Asset
Morecambe, an advanced-stage offshore wind farm, was initially secured during the UK Offshore Wind Leasing Round 4 in 2021. The project is well-positioned to contribute to the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan, which targets significant renewable energy expansion. Nischal Agarwal, Partner at CIP, stated, “CIP is very pleased to acquire Morecambe – a fixed-bottom offshore wind project of excellent fundamental qualities, at an advanced stage of development, and well placed to contribute to the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.”
CIP’s confidence in the UK’s renewable energy strategy is backed by the country’s Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme, which supports offshore wind projects and streamlines planning and grid integration processes. With this latest acquisition, CIP strengthens its UK renewable energy pipeline, now exceeding 25GW across offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and infrastructure projects.
Expanding CIP’s UK Renewable Portfolio
CIP’s presence in the UK offshore wind sector is well-established. Its portfolio includes the operational Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm (588MW) in Scotland and two floating offshore wind projects under development—Pentland (100MW) and Ossian (3,600MW). Morecambe now becomes part of CI V, a flagship fund targeting EUR 12 billion in renewable energy investments across Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific.
CIP’s Global Leadership in Renewable Energy
Founded in 2012, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners is the world’s largest dedicated fund manager focused on greenfield renewable energy investments. The company oversees 12 funds and has raised approximately EUR 32 billion from over 180 institutional investors worldwide. CIP specializes in offshore and onshore wind, solar PV, biomass, energy-from-waste, transmission infrastructure, energy storage, and Power-to-X technologies. With a global workforce of around 500 employees across 14 offices, CIP continues to be a major player in advancing the energy transition.
Future Outlook
With the Morecambe project integrated into its portfolio, CIP strengthens its position in the UK offshore wind sector. As the UK pushes forward with its 2030 offshore wind targets, projects like Morecambe will play a crucial role in bolstering the country’s clean energy infrastructure.
