Digital monitoring moves deeper into offshore decision making

CoreMarine has proposed renewing the CoreIntegrity license for Vår Energi’s Goliat FPSO, extending a partnership centered on digital mooring integrity management and offshore operational reliability.

Announced from Stavanger on May 19, the proposed renewal reflects a broader shift across offshore energy operations where digital integrity systems are increasingly being used as operational decision tools rather than passive monitoring platforms.

According to Hale Korkmaz, Lead Project Manager at CoreMarine, the system has evolved into a day to day operational platform supporting faster responses and earlier identification of integrity risks.

“Over the past years, CoreIntegrity has become embedded in how the Goliat FPSO operates day to day,” Korkmaz said. “It’s no longer just about monitoring moorings. It’s about enabling faster decisions, preventing issues before they escalate, and giving operations teams continuous confidence in the integrity of a critical offshore asset.”

The Goliat FPSO operates in the Barents Sea, where harsh weather conditions and remote operations place additional focus on mooring reliability and fatigue monitoring. In that environment, offshore operators increasingly rely on continuous data streams instead of periodic inspections alone. It is similar to how predictive maintenance transformed aviation years ago. Waiting for visible problems is no longer considered enough.

Focus on mooring reliability and data transparency

During the current licensing period, CoreMarine said it worked with Vår Energi to improve tension verification methodologies and address inconsistencies linked to legacy load cells.

The work included calibration campaigns, data validation exercises, and wider system reviews designed to strengthen traceability and technical confidence in mooring load monitoring and fatigue assessment.

CoreIntegrity has also expanded into a centralized operational platform integrating wave radar, draft sensors, calibration records, and supporting documentation into a single digital environment.

One operational change highlighted by the company was the introduction of enhanced analytics capable of automatically detecting uneven mooring load distribution. The system is intended to improve early warning capability and allow crews to intervene before issues develop further.

The company stated that the revised approach to tension verification has improved operational efficiency while reducing the frequency and cost of traditional verification campaigns.

New development roadmap targets fleet expansion

The proposed renewal includes a development roadmap tied to Vår Energi’s longer term offshore operations strategy.

Planned additions include a regulatory compliance framework aligned with NORSOK standards, expanded fatigue tracking capability, automatic model calibration, and a new riser monitoring module.

CoreMarine also plans to strengthen survey interfaces designed to support faster re tensioning decisions during offshore operations.

Another major focus is fleet deployment readiness. The company said the platform is being prepared for scalable implementation across additional offshore assets within Vår Energi’s portfolio.

Ben Fitzgerald, CEO of CoreMarine, said the next phase of development will focus less on software maturity and more on operational impact across wider offshore infrastructure.

The companies said the collaboration aims to further improve offshore safety, asset reliability, and operational life extension for critical energy infrastructure.
