COSCO SHIPPING Unveils Twelve New 14,000 TEU Dual-Fuel Methanol Container Vessels

COSCO SHIPPING is making waves with the introduction of twelve new 14,000 TEU dual-fuel methanol container vessels, setting a new standard in green energy and efficiency. These vessels represent the latest in maritime technology, combining state-of-the-art design with environmentally friendly features, reflecting COSCO SHIPPING’s commitment to sustainable shipping.

The new ships are part of a cutting-edge generation of vessels developed collaboratively by COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, and the China Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Design and Research Institute. Each vessel measures 335.9 meters in length and 51 meters in width, featuring an innovative invisible bulb bow and a stern energy-saving device to enhance hydrodynamics and reduce fuel consumption.

Among the standout features of these new vessels is their high capacity for refrigerated containers, known as reefers, making them particularly suited for transporting perishable goods. The ships are powered by dual-fuel methanol engines and generators, a choice that reflects a shift towards cleaner fuel alternatives in the shipping industry. The methanol engines are complemented by the world’s most powerful permanent magnet shaft generators, a significant advancement in energy-efficient maritime technology.

In addition to these innovations, the vessels are equipped with a bow wind deflector and an air lubrication system designed to reduce hull friction and improve fuel efficiency. The ships also incorporate intelligent systems developed by COSCO SHIPPING, which not only meet the third phase of Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) standards but also comply with the latest cybersecurity regulations. These features ensure that the vessels are both environmentally sustainable and secure from a technological standpoint.

The signing ceremony for these new vessels was attended by Sun Yunfei, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING Group, alongside leaders and guests from the company’s Science and Technology Innovation Centre, COSCO SHIPPING Lines, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, Beijing COSCO SHIPPING Ship Trading, and other affiliated units. The ceremony celebrated the continued partnership between these organizations and their shared commitment to driving innovation in the maritime sector.

COSCO SHIPPING Holdings is currently focused on a dual strategy of building new vessels and modernizing its existing fleet to expedite its transition towards a greener, low-carbon future. The company has not only ordered these twelve 14,000 TEU container ships with methanol dual-fuel propulsion but also signed contracts to convert eight of its existing vessels to methanol dual-fuel propulsion. Furthermore, COSCO SHIPPING is actively promoting eco-friendly practices, such as all-electric ship operations and biofuel pilot projects, strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable shipping.
