Danish Shipping Firms Navigate Global Trade Turbulence with Composure

Despite escalating trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainties, Danish shipping companies maintain a steady course, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in the face of market volatility.

A recent survey conducted by Danish Shipping reveals that, even amid a full-scale trade war between the U.S., China, and the EU, most Danish shipping firms are not altering their strategic plans. Out of 35 chief executives surveyed, 24 responded—representing over 90% of Danish tonnage—and reported stable expectations for freight rates, financing opportunities, and workforce levels over the next 12 months.

While 19 of the 24 respondents anticipate changes in trade patterns due to ongoing geopolitical conflicts, the industry exhibits a cautious yet forward-looking approach. Investment in new vessels has slightly dipped, not as a sign of retreat, but as a strategic pause. Companies are particularly focused on sustainability, with a readiness to invest in ships powered by alternative fuels when market conditions stabilize.

Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping, encapsulated the industry’s sentiment: “Our ships sail where there are goods to be transported. Danish shipping companies are resilient and adaptable, and that’s why I’m optimistic that they will get through the current turbulence and uncertainty.”

The survey also highlights the industry’s capacity to adapt to rapid market changes. Steffensen added, “Reality today is different than it was just two weeks ago. No one knows what the future holds for global trade, but the shipping companies are not panicking. They are letting reason and patience prevail.”

This measured approach is further exemplified by Maersk, Denmark’s largest shipping company. Despite facing potential impacts from U.S. tariffs and global economic uncertainties, Maersk forecasts a 4% growth in global container volumes for 2025. CEO Vincent Clerc emphasized that consumer purchasing power, rather than tariffs alone, will be the key determinant of trade volumes.

Danish shipping companies are demonstrating a balanced blend of caution and confidence, positioning themselves to navigate the complexities of global trade with strategic foresight and adaptability.
