Deltamarin has inked a significant contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai) to design and engineer the 14th and 15th vessels in Stena RoRo’s renowned E-Flexer series. This latest agreement covers the complete basic and detailed design for two new multi-fuel E-Flexer RoPax vessels, each prepared for methanol fuel, marking a pivotal step towards more sustainable maritime operations.
The newly designed vessels will soon be chartered by Attica Group for Adriatic routes, with an option for two additional E-Flexer vessels in the future. Built by Stena RoRo at the CMI Jinling Shipyard in China, these vessels are set for delivery in April and August 2027.
Equipped with multi-fuel engines, the new vessels can run on conventional marine fuels like heavy fuel oil (HFO) or marine gas oil (MGO), biodiesel, and are already prepared for methanol. They also boast a PTI/PTO setup and a “Battery Power” notation, providing the option for battery propulsion in the future. These features, combined with advanced technology for optimizing fuel efficiency, are expected to reduce Attica Group’s greenhouse gas emissions by up to 60% per transport work compared to their current fleet, aligning with both current and anticipated environmental standards.
This contract not only solidifies the existing partnership between Deltamarin and Stena RoRo but also underlines their shared dedication to driving innovation and sustainability within the maritime industry. With these two additional vessels, the total confirmed E-Flexer orders reach 15, with ten already delivered.
Janne Uotila, Managing Director of Deltamarin, emphasizes the strength of this ongoing collaboration: “This new contract reflects the strong ongoing partnership between Deltamarin, Stena RoRo, and China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. The continued interest in the E-Flexer vessels, as evidenced by the high number of orders, highlights their value and positions them as the leading solution in their class. We value our longstanding partnership with Stena and CMI and look forward to advancing these projects together.”
Per Westling, CEO of Stena RoRo AB, adds, “With Attica and Deltamarin, we have developed the most bespoke E-Flexer concept so far, and this design is a new landmark for highly efficient, cost-effective, and future-proof RoPax vessels. With the capability of using both conventional fuel, biodiesel, bio- and e-Methanol, as well as batteries for propulsion, the shipowner has a vessel that can be operated with zero CO2 emissions in the future. The longstanding and good cooperation between Deltamarin, CMI Jinling (Weihai) Shipyard, and Stena RoRo has again proven most successful.”
As the maritime industry faces increasing pressure to adapt to stricter environmental standards, the E-Flexer series represents a significant step forward, combining versatility, efficiency, and sustainability. With the continued investment in multi-fuel capabilities and future-proofing technology, Deltamarin and Stena RoRo are positioning themselves as leaders in this transition toward a greener future.
