DEME Group has installed the 22nd of 44 turbines at the Nordseecluster A offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, taking the 660 MW project to the halfway point in its turbine installation programme.
The milestone was reached on August 31 at the project site about 50 kilometres north of the German island of Juist. RWE, which is responsible for construction and future operation, said the project remains on schedule for full grid connection in early 2027.
Each turbine has capacity of up to 15 MW.
Norse Wind handles five turbine sets per voyage
DEME is carrying out turbine transport and installation with its jack up vessel Norse Wind, operating from the Port of Esbjerg in Denmark.
The vessel can transport components for as many as five complete turbine sets per cycle, including tower sections, nacelles and blades. The first turbine was installed in June, meaning the installation campaign has reached its midpoint in less than three months.
Norse Wind entered service earlier this year and is equipped with a 3,200 tonne crane. DEME designed the vessel for installing larger offshore turbines and XXL monopiles in water depths of up to 70 metres.
For offshore logistics operators, carrying five sets on each trip reduces the number of port rotations required between Esbjerg and the construction site, an important factor when installation schedules depend heavily on vessel availability and weather windows.
First power already reaches German grid
Installation is continuing alongside testing and commissioning. The first Nordseecluster A turbine began supplying electricity to the German grid in July, several weeks after turbine installation started.
RWE expects all 44 turbines to be installed by the end of 2026, with the full 660 MW development connected at the beginning of 2027.
Nordseecluster A forms the first stage of the wider 1.6 GW Nordseecluster development. The second phase, Nordseecluster B, will add another 900 MW through 60 Vestas turbines. Foundation production has started, with turbine installation scheduled for 2028 and commercial operations targeted for early 2029.
The overall project is owned 51% by RWE and 49% by Norges Bank Investment Management. Once both phases are operating, RWE expects Nordseecluster to generate about 6.5 TWh of electricity annually.
