DEME, through its Taiwanese joint venture CDWE, has been awarded a substantial contract for the Formosa 4 offshore wind farm, marking another milestone in Taiwan’s growing renewable energy sector. The scope includes the transport and installation of 35 foundations, the offshore substation, and scour protection works.
A Key Step in Taiwan’s Energy Transition
Formosa 4, developed by Taiwan-based Synera Renewable Energy, will be located roughly 20 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli County. Once operational, the project is expected to deliver 495 MW of renewable energy, contributing significantly to Taiwan’s long-term clean energy strategy.
The foundation installation works are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027, pending the project’s final investment decision.
Fleet Deployment and Local Capacity Building
The work will involve several vessels from DEME’s fleet, including the Green Jade, a floating offshore installation vessel built and operated by CDWE. It is the first of its kind to be designed and constructed in Taiwan. For scour protection, DEME will deploy a dedicated rock placement vessel.
Since entering the Taiwanese market in 2019, DEME has been actively involved in shaping the country’s offshore wind capabilities. Its joint venture CDWE has contributed to major projects such as Zhong Neng, Changfang Xidao, and Hai Long, alongside work on the Greater Changhua offshore wind farm.
Building Experience and Local Expertise
Frank Jonckheere, General Manager Asia-Pacific – Offshore Energy at DEME, emphasized the broader value of the project. “The Formosa 4 contract builds on DEME’s strong track record in Taiwan. We are proud to play a significant role in advancing Taiwan’s clean energy transition and supporting its long-term vision for renewables. Through our joint venture CDWE, we provide integrated solutions that help our clients successfully develop their projects. In addition to bringing decades of knowledge and experience to Taiwan, we are nurturing local marine engineering talents and seafarers specialized in offshore wind who will help drive the industry forward for years to come.”
With the Formosa 4 project, Taiwan continues to strengthen its offshore wind sector while expanding opportunities for local talent and industry development.
