Milan, Italy, July 31, 2024 – In a significant logistical feat, deugro Italy, alongside deugro Chartering, has successfully delivered 54 kilometers of urgent HVAC cables for the Turkish Crossing Project. This critical delivery was made to a cable-laying vessel stationed in Turkey, ensuring that operations remained on schedule.
The cables, weighing a total of 3,300 metric tons, were transported from Prysmian Powerlink’s manufacturing facility in Pikkala, Finland. With a tight deadline to meet the arrival of the cable-laying vessel Giulio Verne in the Dardanelles Strait, Turkey, deugro provided a comprehensive service solution. This included tank engineering, installation, spooling, and all necessary equipment and personnel for the ocean transportation.

After meticulous market research, deugro Chartering selected the heavy lift vessel BBC Xingang, which was available at short notice and met all the technical and personnel requirements for this unique cargo. However, before the vessel could be deployed, several technical modifications were necessary. These included the installation of static tanks and a bow section conversion, which were carried out at the Port of Bremerhaven, Germany. Within seven days, these modifications were completed, and the BBC Xingang arrived at the Pikkala Prysmian factory port in Finland as scheduled.
The loading operations in Pikkala were conducted under constant supervision and rigorous testing by the client, deugro, dteq Transport Engineering Solutions, and the vessel’s team. Despite harsh weather conditions and surface ice, the project team efficiently managed the logistics, ensuring a perfectly aligned mooring system and constant monitoring.
Francesco Pignati of deugro Milan commented on the challenges faced, “The project team encountered harsh weather conditions and surface ice, and had to deal with the fairly long distance from the ship’s anchor position to shore. This required a perfectly aligned mooring system and constant monitoring.”
Within a week, the cables were successfully spooled into the custom-designed tanks, and the BBC Xingang arrived punctually at the Port of Hydarpaşa in Turkey. The seamless execution of the unspooling operations allowed the cable-laying vessel to commence its installation as planned. After the successful delivery, the BBC Xingang proceeded to the Port of Naples, Italy, for demobilization of the spooling equipment.
Stefano Sortino of deugro Milan praised the collaborative efforts that ensured the project’s success. “Due to the critical urgency—the cable needed to be quickly delivered in order to commence installation and keep the overall cost of the project to a minimum—scheduling, precise preparation and smooth project execution were paramount. Thanks to the professional collaboration of all partners, the tight schedule and demanding project requirements were met, and the urgent cables were delivered on time—keeping the cable-laying operations of the Turkish Crossing Project on track. The smooth project execution once again demonstrates deugro’s flexibility and ability to design and orchestrate innovative solutions that go far beyond standardized cargo movement.”
