DFDS confirmed on Wednesday that President and CEO Torben Carlsen will step down on 17 April 2026, with the Danish ferry and ro-ro operator accelerating its succession timeline following improving financial performance in late 2025 and early 2026.
The announcement, issued as Company Announcement no. 11, advances a leadership transition that had been expected to conclude on 1 July 2026 when incoming CEO Michael Hansen was originally slated to take the helm.
Interim leadership activated
Karen Boesen, currently serving as Chief Financial Officer, will assume the role of Interim CEO effective 18 April 2026, bridging the gap until Hansen formally joins on 1 July 2026.
Hansen brings roughly two decades of experience at A.P. Moller Maersk, where he held senior management roles across Europe, Latin America, and Oceania, including CEO of Seago Line and global head of sales for Maersk Line. He most recently served as President and CEO of Hempel, a coatings manufacturer.
Financial recovery cited as catalyst
The board cited a recovery in financial results as the principal factor in moving the transition forward. DFDS stated that financial performance began to improve toward the end of 2025 and that the trend continued through the first months of 2026.
Board Chair Claus V. Hemmingsen acknowledged Carlsen’s service, noting his focus during the succession period had kept the company on track through its ongoing transition.
Carlsen, who joined DFDS in 2009 and served as CEO since 2019, said he was confident in the company’s direction. Under his tenure, DFDS acquired Norfolkline and expanded into the Mediterranean through UN RoRo.
Transition implications for operations
The board identified lifting financial performance as the clear short-term task for incoming leadership, with the longer-term objective of unlocking network value through operational optimisation and organic growth.
The three-week window between Carlsen’s departure and Hansen’s arrival places Boesen in a critical stabilising role across DFDS routes spanning the North Sea, Baltic, Channel, and Mediterranean corridors, which carry significant freight and passenger ro-ro volumes for European trade.
