Drydocks World has signed a contract with Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. (ZPMC) to acquire a new 5,000-tonne floating sheerleg crane, set to be the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa. The acquisition marks a significant step for Drydocks World in boosting its heavy-lifting capabilities to meet the increasing demand for large-scale offshore projects. The contract signing ceremony in Dubai was attended by key figures, including His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, Captain Rado Antolovic, CEO of Drydocks World, and You Ruikai, Chairman of ZPMC.
The new crane is designed to lift heavy loads up to 5,000 tonnes and elevate them 120 meters above the water, with a 600-tonne fly jib that can extend its reach to 180 meters. This massive crane, built with high-strength steel, will be an essential asset for handling large offshore structures, allowing for more efficient installation and assembly processes, both nearshore and offshore. Additionally, the crane is equipped to accommodate up to 50 personnel offshore, reducing the need for multiple support vessels and making it well-suited for a variety of projects, including the construction of offshore platforms, bridges, and other marine developments.
H.E. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem commented on this strategic acquisition, stating, “Our investment in such a significant piece of equipment marks a strategic milestone for Drydocks World and demonstrates our commitment to enhancing our offerings to customers and achieving operational excellence worldwide. Once operational, this giant crane will strengthen our leadership in the maritime industry and boost our ability to support projects that drive regional economic growth.”
The crane’s construction, testing, and commissioning phases are expected to take around 24 months, with completion targeted for the second quarter of 2026. Once operational, it will serve to enhance Drydocks World’s ability to execute heavy-lifting tasks required for high-voltage offshore converter platforms, Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel topsides, and other large-scale projects. This new addition will complement Drydocks World’s extensive expertise, highlighted by recent achievements such as the conversion of Tango FLNG and Excalibur FSU vessels and the ongoing EPC project on the UK Norfolk Vanguard Offshore Wind Platforms.
Captain Rado Antolovic, CEO of Drydocks World, emphasized the transformative potential of this crane for the company, saying, “Acquiring the Middle East and Africa’s largest crane of this type is a transformative step for Drydocks World. As offshore vessels continue to grow in size, the need for advanced lifting solutions with features like angled booms has become increasingly important. This new sheerleg crane, with its ability to handle heavier modules and expedite project timelines, enables us to manage more extensive and complex projects, further solidifying our status as a global leader in the maritime and offshore energy industries.”
You Ruikai, Chairman of ZPMC, highlighted the importance of this partnership, stating, “Our partnership with Drydocks World builds on a history of successful projects with DP World and opens doors for future projects together. We are proud to collaborate on this project, delivering a state-of-the-art crane that combines power with cutting-edge technology for maximum efficiency and safety.”
The new crane is built with advanced safety features and a sophisticated integrated control system to enhance operational efficiency. It also includes an automatic ballasting system for stability and a high-capacity ballast water treatment plant, reflecting Drydocks World’s commitment to environmental sustainability. This focus on safety and environmental standards ensures that the crane will not only meet but exceed global benchmarks, making it a standout addition to Drydocks World’s arsenal.
Drydocks World has continuously positioned itself as a leader in marine and offshore services, serving sectors like shipping, oil, gas, and renewable energy. Strategically located in Dubai and with a track record of handling some of the largest new-build offshore fabrications globally, Drydocks World continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the maritime industry. The addition of the 5,000-tonne floating sheerleg crane will further elevate its status as a premier international yard of choice.
