Combined Cargo Terminals B.V. (CCT) is stepping up its handling game at its Moerdijk terminal with a fresh investment in a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.7 Mobile Harbor Crane, equipped with an external power supply for greener operations.
Booked in the first quarter of 2025, the delivery is locked in for the third quarter of the year. For CCT, it’s more than just adding another piece of heavy machinery; it’s about keeping pace with growing cargo volumes and tightening CO2 targets. Sitting strategically between Rotterdam and Antwerp, the Moerdijk site plays a critical role as a trimodal hub, combining road, rail, and inland waterway connections across Europe.
The ESP.7 crane brings a working radius of 51 meters and upgraded visibility features for operators, a clear step up from the previous Model 6 cranes already at the terminal. Thanks to a higher container handling classification, the new crane is expected to offer a longer service life and a performance boost when dealing with increasingly larger vessels docking at the port.
Speaking about the new arrival, Luc Smits, Managing Director of Combined Cargo Terminals, pointed out the growing operational demands: “This latest crane gives us the visibility, reach, and speed we need for serving the larger size of vessels increasingly calling at the terminal. Konecranes is a key partner on our growth and sustainability journey, having supplied us with equipment since the start of our operations in 2005.”
The decision to choose an external power supply setup reflects a wider industry shift toward reducing fuel consumption and cutting local emissions. It’s a small piece of a much larger puzzle as ports across Europe and beyond scramble to meet new environmental standards. The move also aligns with Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, a commitment to boosting the positive environmental impact of its equipment while shrinking carbon footprints. Whether it’s tweaking diesel drives, hybridizing fleets, or pushing fully-electric solutions, the message is clear: doing more with less is the name of the game.
For Giuseppe Di Lisa, Vice President Sales & Marketing, Mobile Harbor Cranes at Konecranes, this order cements an enduring partnership. “This latest order strengthens a trusted relationship built over two decades. As CCT’s needs have evolved, so too have the solutions provided by Konecranes. We’re committed to supporting high-performance and eco-efficient port logistics for all our customers.”
The crane isn’t joining the fleet alone. CCT’s operations already lean on a strong lineup of Konecranes equipment, including a sizeable fleet of reach stackers that ensure terminal productivity stays sharp. It’s all part of a broader strategy to stay competitive in a fast-changing logistics environment where speed, efficiency, and sustainability aren’t just nice-to-haves anymore—they’re survival essentials.
