AtoB@C Shipping’s first plug-in hybrid vessel, Electramar, was christened in a traditional ceremony at the heart of Helsinki on May 15th. The event, attended by clients, stakeholders, and employees, included the age-old maritime tradition of breaking a bottle of sparkling wine against the vessel’s bow, symbolizing good fortune and safe voyages for Electramar and its crew.

Paula Ojala, Chartering Manager at SSAB, a prominent global steel company and long-term partner of AtoB@C Shipping and ESL Shipping, was honored as the vessel’s godmother. Reflecting on the occasion, Ojala expressed her gratitude, saying, “The cooperation between SSAB, ESL Shipping, and AtoB@C Shipping has a rich, decades-old history, and I am deeply honored and humbled to be the godmother of this remarkable, energy-efficient vessel.”
Mikki Koskinen, Managing Director of ESL Shipping and Chairman of the Board at AtoB@C Shipping AB, highlighted the significance of this development. “Both the steel industry and shipping are entering a new era where fossil-free fuels are gradually being replaced with more sustainable alternatives. SSAB is a pioneer in green steel, and we are delighted to have their representative as the godmother for the vessel.”
Electramar represents a significant advancement in maritime technology, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to current-generation vessels. This reduction is achieved through its shore power connectivity, extensive battery installation, and enhanced cargo capacity. Additionally, Electramar offers quieter and cleaner operations while in port, making it an environmentally friendly choice for bulk and breakbulk transport.
The vessel is designed to carry a variety of bulk and breakbulk products, including steel, forest products, fertilizers, and project cargoes. Its long, unobstructed deck allows for the loading of more deck cargo and longer project cargoes than the current vessels in the fleet, enhancing its versatility and efficiency.
The launch of Electramar is just the beginning of AtoB@C Shipping’s fleet modernization. Stellamar, the second vessel in the series, is currently en route from India to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope. Meanwhile, the production of the ninth unit, Fleximar, began in April with a ceremonial steel-cutting event.
