Starting from September 2024, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is set to enhance its rail connectivity significantly. The port, already a crucial hub in European logistics, is introducing more frequent rail services and a new connection to Spain, marking a significant upgrade in its intermodal transport capabilities.
Increased Frequency on Antwerp-Catalonia Route
From September 16, 2024, rail services between Antwerp and Catalonia will see a substantial increase in frequency. Hupac, in partnership with Lineas, will expand its Antwerp-Catalonia Line services to operate 10 times a week. This upgrade is a direct response to improved service quality and growing demand along this route. The Antwerp-Catalonia Line, departing from the Combinant terminal in Antwerp, will continue to serve terminals in Perpignan and Barcelona. This expanded schedule not only enhances the flexibility and efficiency of container, trailer, and swap body transportation but also provides more multimodal options for cargo moving to the south of France.
New Direct Rail Connection to Madrid
In addition to the increased frequency on the Antwerp-Catalonia route, a new rail link to Madrid will be introduced by Kombiverkehr starting September 3, 2024. This new service will provide a twice-weekly direct connection between Antwerp and Madrid. The trains will depart from the Combinant terminal in Antwerp and arrive at the Abronigal terminal in Madrid. With DB Cargo and Renfe partnering for traction, this new service promises a reliable and secure transport solution for containers, swap bodies, and hazardous materials.
These new rail initiatives are expected to further enhance the Port of Antwerp-Bruges’ role as a key logistics hub, offering more streamlined and efficient connections across Europe and into Spain. The increased connectivity underscores the port’s commitment to improving its intermodal services and meeting the evolving needs of its clients.
