Heavy-lift logistics specialist Felbermayr recently executed a meticulous transport of a 100-ton metal milling machine in Linz, Austria, combining road and inland waterway logistics in a tightly coordinated operation. The project showcased the company’s expertise in managing large-scale industrial relocations under complex spatial and timing constraints.
The machine, including its robust wooden transport crate, stretched about 16 meters long, 4.3 meters wide, and 4.6 meters high—dimensions that demanded careful route planning and precision handling. The move began at the customer’s production site and ended at Felbermayr’s own heavy-duty port facility, a short but logistically intense route that cut through the industrial Voestalpine complex.

Combining Strength and Precision
Before transport, the Felbermayr team deployed a specialized lifting gantry system, or Hubgerüst, to prepare the machine for its journey. Using their in-house indoor crane, the crew securely lifted the milling unit—already crated for protection—onto a 10-axle semi-low loader (Semitieflader). This careful loading phase underscored the precision engineering behind every step of heavy machinery transport.
Although the road segment spanned only a few kilometers, the convoy’s movement required roughly one and a half hours. Tight turns, plant infrastructure, and weight distribution along the Voestalpine site demanded exact coordination between the escort vehicles, drivers, and crane operators. Safety and synchronization were key, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining the highest operational standards.
