Gebrüder Weiss Marks 20 Years of Growth and Innovation in Serbia

Gebrüder Weiss is celebrating two decades of success in Serbia, highlighting its journey from a small office in Belgrade to becoming a major logistics player in the Western Balkans. Over the past 20 years, the company has cemented its position as a key player in the Serbian market, offering a comprehensive suite of logistics solutions, including land, air, and sea freight, customs clearance, and warehouse services.

“Serbia has undergone remarkable economic development in recent years,” noted Wolfram Senger-Weiss, CEO of Gebrüder Weiss. The decision to establish a logistics hub in Serbia has paid off as the country has become an essential procurement market, particularly for automotive parts, food, textiles, and furniture. Currently, around 70% of Serbia’s exports head to the EU, underlining its role as a vital economic link in the region.

Gebrüder Weiss now operates four locations in Serbia, including its headquarters in Dobanovci, near Belgrade, and additional sites in Novi Sad, Niš, and Strojkovce. Its logistics footprint in the country has expanded to 20,000 square meters, supporting groupage freight shipments across the Balkans and into the EU multiple times per week. In 2023, the company reported impressive net revenue of €53 million, illustrating the strength of its Serbian operations.

The recent opening of a new logistics warehouse at the Dobanovci headquarters marks another key milestone. The facility runs entirely on solar power, a reflection of Gebrüder Weiss’ commitment to sustainability. The company aims to cut CO2 emissions significantly, with the new solar-powered facility reducing annual emissions by 90 tons. Gebrüder Weiss also operates eight natural gas trucks and uses rail transport for a portion of its shipments, further reducing its carbon footprint. Plans are already in place to introduce zero-emission e-transporters for customer deliveries in Serbia starting next year.

“Every year, 1,500 containers move by rail from Budapest to the Ruhr area, saving over a thousand tons of CO2 compared to traditional trucking,” explained Roland Raith, Gebrüder Weiss’ Country Manager for Serbia. This move reflects the company’s broader sustainability strategy, which emphasizes eco-friendly transport solutions.

Starting small in 2004, Gebrüder Weiss now employs 300 people in Serbia. The company has also pioneered a dual training program in the country, offering young professionals practical and academic training in logistics. This initiative, launched in 2018 in partnership with the Transport and Technical School in Belgrade, ensures a steady pipeline of skilled professionals to support the company’s future growth.
