In a move aimed at enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency, German family-owned shipping company Reederei Bernd Sibum has placed an order with Damen Shipyards Group for the construction of four Combi Freighters (CF) 3850. These vessels, scheduled for delivery in early 2026, represent the company’s first collaboration with Damen.
Reederei Bernd Sibum, based in Haren, Germany, sought feedback from existing operators of the CF 3850 before finalizing their decision. According to the shipping company, the vessels’ strong track record of operational efficiency and positive testimonials from other clients played a crucial role in their choice.
Advanced, Future-Ready Ships
The CF 3850 design offers significant upgrades, including a 30% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to previous models. These hybrid-ready vessels are built with the future in mind, able to run on biofuels and adaptable to wind-assist technologies. To further improve their environmental footprint, the vessels are equipped with a battery system used during port operations and bow thruster peak shaving. Moreover, they are designed for easy retrofitting of battery-powered propulsion systems and upgraded shore power connections, ensuring minimal downtime for future technology integrations.
Manufactured at Damen Yichang Shipyard in China, with design and engineering support from Damen’s Drachten office in the Netherlands, the ships meet the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. Upon completion, the vessels will operate within the northwest European short sea shipping market, where fleet modernization is essential to meet the growing demands for greener maritime transport solutions.

Built to Last
Bernd Sibum, Managing Director of Reederei Bernd Sibum, expressed his excitement about the partnership: “Our company has a long tradition of working with shipyards to develop vessels that meet market demands. With the CF 3850, we’re investing in a sustainable future for our fleet while ensuring we can adapt to upcoming innovations.”
Sibum also urged the broader maritime industry to focus on developing shore-based infrastructure to support these greener technologies. “This investment is a significant step toward decarbonization, but we need the entire shipping industry to follow suit and develop the necessary infrastructure to fully realize the potential of these vessels,” he added.
Remko Bouma, Commercial Director of Damen Cargo Vessels, expressed his appreciation for the trust Reederei Bernd Sibum has placed in Damen. “These hybrid-ready freighters are a smart investment for the future. We believe they will support not only Sibum’s fleet but also the broader short sea market for years to come.”
As sustainability becomes a key driver in the shipping industry, this partnership marks a significant step toward greener, more efficient maritime operations, setting a new benchmark for short sea shipping.
