Grupo Modesto Enhances Fleet with Two New Liebherr Mobile Cranes

Grupo Modesto, S.A., a prominent crane, heavy haulage, and construction company in the Dominican Republic, has recently expanded its fleet by acquiring two new Liebherr mobile cranes: the LTM 1150-5.3 and the LTM 1230-5.1. These additions are set to bolster the company’s capabilities, particularly in industrial construction projects within the Santo Domingo metropolitan area.

Traditionally, the Dominican market has leaned towards purchasing used cranes. However, Grupo Modesto has taken a pioneering step by investing in factory-new equipment. José Roberto Modesto, Vice-President of Grupo Modesto, highlighted the country’s recent economic growth and the increasing demand for cranes with lifting capacities between 150 to 230 tonnes. He noted that the versatility of the LTM 1150-5.3 and LTM 1230-5.1 makes them suitable even for larger projects.

The company opted for these models due to their robust performance, extended telescopic booms, and innovative technical features. Key factors influencing their decision included the variable VarioBase® support system and VarioBallast®, which enhance safety and efficiency, especially on constricted construction sites. Additionally, the inclusion of a second winch allows for dual-hook operations, expanding the cranes’ operational versatility.

Grupo Modesto’s confidence in Liebherr stems from positive past experiences. Modesto emphasized the exceptional service provided by Liebherr, stating that their customer-centric approach and reliable support were instrumental in the purchasing decision.

The newly acquired cranes have already demonstrated their value in the field. Their inaugural assignment involved the dismantling of an old harbor crane at the port of Santo Domingo. This operation presented challenges due to the significant lifting heights required, with safety being paramount. The LTM 1150-5.3, equipped with 29 tonnes of ballast, was utilized to hoist a work basket carrying two crew members tasked with detaching components of the old crane. Subsequently, the LTM 1230-5.1, configured with 42 tonnes of ballast, lowered these components for transport. The heaviest piece handled weighed six tonnes and was lifted from a height of 75 meters. The entire dismantling process spanned eight days.

Established in 1975, Grupo Modesto holds the distinction of being the first crane rental company in the Dominican Republic. Today, the company employs approximately 50 individuals and operates a fleet of 20 cranes, with lifting capacities ranging from 5 to 350 tonnes. Beyond crane rental services, Grupo Modesto is recognized as one of the oldest construction firms in the market, with divisions specializing in prefabrication and heavy transport.
