North East-based engineering firm Harlyn Solutions Ltd (Harlyn) has signed a deal with Ocean Winds to handle the collection, storage, and emergency preparedness of spare inter-array cables for the Moray West offshore wind farm. Located in the outer Moray Firth, Moray West is a new project that aims to significantly contribute to Scotland’s renewable energy and climate goals. Ocean Winds, a joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE, oversees this ambitious project.
Moray West began generating power in July and will eventually feature 60 wind turbines, each boasting a capacity of 14.7 megawatts. It’s a vital cog in Scotland’s energy transition towards Net Zero emissions, representing both an engineering challenge and an environmental necessity.
Harlyn’s involvement includes the collection and storage of the spare inter-array cables at their facility in the Port of Blyth. This marks the third project Harlyn has successfully secured with Ocean Winds, following earlier engagements that saw the company transport substations and clean monopiles on-site. Harlyn has demonstrated its capabilities in flexible logistics solutions, including the recent design of custom baskets for fiber optic cable transport and the delivery of six 1,500-tonne flexible pipe baskets.
Hamish Adamson, Harlyn’s managing director, expressed his excitement over the continued partnership: “I am thrilled that our unique problem-solving approach to projects has been picked up and understood by Ocean Winds. Our teams have worked hand-in-hand across multiple scopes, and this long-term project shows the dependability of the team we have at Harlyn as being the partner of choice for these complex challenges.”
Ocean Winds’ confidence in Harlyn’s services is evident. Pete Geddes, Moray West Project Director, said: “We’re delighted to be using Harlyn to store our cables in the UK. Delivering local content is important to Ocean Winds and working with Harlyn for a third scope, we are able to support a thoroughly competent UK supplier.”
Joanna Stewart, the project manager at Harlyn, will lead this complex undertaking, overseeing the collection and storage of the cables. She commented, “I am excited to be leading on and delivering this complex multi-disciplinary project. It highlights the skills and expertise that Harlyn has to offer, from complex project management through to detailed spooling and flexible engineering.”
The project is expected to be completed in the next few months, after which the cables and their accessories will be stored for future use.
