A Leadership Shift at the Helm

Heerema Marine Contractors has appointed Marcel de Nooijer as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective January 1, 2026. The move marks a new chapter for the offshore contractor as it positions itself for the future of the energy transition.
De Nooijer comes to the role after more than 30 years in the aviation industry, where he held senior management roles that required balancing safety, complex operations, and significant capital investments. While aviation and offshore construction may seem like very different sectors, both demand precision, international coordination, and the ability to deliver projects under pressure.
From Aviation to Offshore Energy
For de Nooijer, the shift from aviation to offshore energy is less a leap and more a natural step. “I’m honored to join Heerema Marine Contractors as of January 1, 2026,” he said. “After three decades in the aviation industry, I look forward to applying my leadership and strategic experience in the dynamic and international offshore energy sector. HMC’s focus on innovative offshore solutions and delivering long-term value for clients and stakeholders is truly motivating, and I am eager to contribute to the company’s continued growth and success.”
That sense of continuity—transferring expertise from one high-stakes environment to another—sets the tone for his leadership approach. Aviation and offshore energy both deal with unpredictable conditions, high safety standards, and the constant challenge of managing risk. The question is less about whether skills transfer, and more about how they will be applied to the different rhythms of offshore projects.
A Smooth Handover
Until de Nooijer officially takes over, Pieter Heerema will continue as interim CEO. “We welcome Marcel as CEO of Heerema Marine Contractors,” Heerema said. “With his proven leadership and international experience, I am confident that he will successfully guide our company into the future. Until January 1, I will continue in my role as interim CEO of Heerema Marine Contractors and will support him during the transition after January 1.”
Such staged leadership transitions are not just about continuity—they also help steady the ship during potentially uncertain waters. In this case, Heerema’s ongoing presence until the new year provides reassurance to clients, employees, and stakeholders alike.
Looking Ahead
De Nooijer’s appointment comes at a time when the offshore energy sector is evolving rapidly. Companies like HMC are expected to deliver complex engineering projects while contributing to renewable and low-carbon energy solutions. Bringing in a leader with a track record in another safety-critical, international industry may be a way to inject fresh thinking into familiar challenges.
And while it remains to be seen how his leadership style will mesh with the offshore world, one thing is clear: HMC is betting on experience, adaptability, and the ability to bridge industries as it charts its next course.
