European transformers move on urgent transatlantic route
Hitachi Energy has completed a time-critical heavy lift shipment from Europe to the United States, moving two large power transformers for a hyperscale data center project serving AI and cloud computing demand.
The transformers were designed and manufactured in Europe and moved from the company’s Lodz transformer campus in Poland to Warsaw by road, before being flown to Chicago on an Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft.
Each unit weighed more than 80 tonnes, placing the cargo firmly in the project logistics category where route planning, ground handling and aircraft availability can determine whether a shipment succeeds or misses a customer deadline.
Air freight underlines schedule pressure
Large transformers are usually planned months ahead and moved by road, barge or ocean freight. Using one of the world’s largest cargo aircraft shows how compressed the delivery window had become.
For project cargo specialists, the move is a clear reminder that the energy transition and digital infrastructure buildout are no longer separate logistics stories. Data centers need power. Power needs grid equipment. Grid equipment needs heavy transport capacity.
It is a simple chain, but one weak link can delay the whole project.
The shipment ran from Lodz, Hitachi Energy’s largest transformer manufacturing campus in Europe, to Warsaw, and then across the Atlantic to Chicago. The use of air freight for transformers of this size remains rare because of payload, loading and cost constraints.
AI growth puts transformers in focus
The project comes as electricity demand from data centers, AI and cloud computing adds pressure to power grids already adapting to industrial electrification and renewable energy integration.
Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers Business Unit, said the issue is no longer only about generating electricity, but whether grids can scale fast enough while staying secure, affordable and resilient.
That point matters for logistics providers. Transformers are not off-the-shelf cargo. They depend on specialist steel, copper, aluminum, engineered components and manufacturing slots that can be difficult to replace at short notice.
When a transformer is delayed, the effect can ripple through construction schedules, grid connections and commercial launch dates.
Europe’s manufacturing base supports global demand
Europe remains a major transformer manufacturing and export base. According to Hitachi Energy, EU exports across key transformer categories reached about $4.2 billion in 2025, with large power transformers accounting for nearly half of that value.
The wider European grid technology sector includes more than 600 companies, 450 factories and over 175,000 employees across transmission and distribution equipment.
That industrial base is becoming more important as global competition intensifies. China has built the largest transformer manufacturing base by scale, helped by domestic demand and integrated supply chains. Europe’s position is different, with strength in high-voltage, HVDC, offshore and high-efficiency transformer technologies.
Industrial capacity becomes a logistics constraint
For breakbulk and heavy lift operators, the lesson is practical. Manufacturing capacity, skilled labor and transport readiness are now part of the same delivery equation.
A transformer may leave a factory as cargo, but it starts as an industrial capability question. Is there enough capacity? Are the materials available? Is the engineering talent in place? Can transport be mobilized when the delivery window closes?
Maxine Ghavi, Region Head Europe at Hitachi Energy, said transformer manufacturing should be treated as strategic infrastructure rather than a standard industrial category.
That view reflects a growing concern across energy and logistics markets. If critical inputs become harder to source, or if manufacturing capacity is constrained, grid expansion can slow just as Europe and the United States push faster electrification.
Heavy lift role widens beyond energy projects
The shipment also shows how project cargo is moving deeper into digital infrastructure. Heavy lift logistics once linked mainly to power plants, offshore energy, mining and industrial projects. AI data centers are now joining that list.
The cargo may be a transformer, but the end user may be a cloud facility. The aircraft may be an Antonov An-124, but the underlying demand comes from servers, cooling systems and rising electricity loads.
In that sense, the Lodz to Chicago move connects European manufacturing, air cargo capacity, grid resilience and the digital economy in one shipment.
