Two massive wire rope reels bound for offshore deployment have been successfully transported from Trieste, Italy, to the Canary Islands by Iscotrans, an Italian project logistics company active since 1976. The operation, carried out in March 2025, showcased the firm’s capability to coordinate high-weight cargo under tight scheduling constraints—marking another milestone in its long-standing experience with specialized freight.
Handling oversized cargo is nothing new in the project logistics sector, but when weights tip beyond 400 tons and deadlines are rigid, execution becomes a matter of fine-tuned coordination. The two reels—one weighing 230 tons, the other 425 tons—required extensive planning, specialized rigging, and precision equipment to ensure safe transfer from the port of Trieste to their offshore destination.
The loading operations took place at the SEADOCK terminal in Trieste, where a combination of shore cranes, vessel-mounted cranes, and custom-engineered gear was used. The first reel, with dimensions of 4.93m x 4.5m x 4.89m, was carefully lifted and placed according to a pre-approved lifting and securing plan. The second, a 425-ton reel measuring 5.53m x 6m x 5.4m, demanded even greater attention due to its size and center-of-gravity considerations.
Despite the complexity, the entire shipment was completed within a condensed timeframe. This required round-the-clock coordination between port operators, heavy lift specialists, and logistics planners. According to Iscotrans, the successful execution reflects their internal logistics framework, which combines decades of hands-on know-how with modern handling technology.
The reels are destined for offshore applications—likely for subsea cable deployment—where structural integrity and timely delivery are critical to project timelines. Shipments of this scale leave no room for error. With limited handling margins and high safety demands, every inch of the process was managed with close attention to engineering specs and operational sequencing.
Iscotrans acknowledged the collaborative effort required to complete the transport. In a statement, the company expressed appreciation for the contributions of all parties involved in the move, noting that precision and partnership remain key factors in project forwarding success.
