In a significant move to bolster its steel handling efficiency, Italy’s Transped S.p.A. has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 ESP.7 mobile harbor crane. The crane, scheduled for delivery in Q2 2025, marks a strategic upgrade for the company at the bustling Venezia-Marghera port. This order, booked in Q4 2024, reflects Transped’s commitment to staying ahead in a highly competitive logistics landscape.
Transped, a subsidiary of the Italian FHP Group, manages an impressive 10 million tonnes of cargo annually, with over two million tonnes of steel passing through its facilities. The company has built a reputation over four decades for precision and reliability in steel handling at the port, which serves as a key hub for northern Italy’s industrial sector. Now, with the acquisition of the ESP.7 crane, Transped is poised to enhance its operational capacity.

Mauro Marchiori, Executive Director of Venice Terminals di Venezia at Transped, highlighted the advantages of the new equipment. “Steel handling requires equipment with precision, stability, and high lifting capacity over extended periods. The extended working radius of the ESP.7 crane will significantly enhance our efficiency across a variety of steel cargo,” Marchiori stated. His comments underscore the operational demands and the role of advanced technology in meeting them.
The ESP.7 crane boasts a higher classification, designed for durability and a potentially doubled service life compared to its predecessor. Its eco-efficient hybrid drive system is a standout feature. By using ultracapacitors to store energy generated during braking, the system reduces reliance on the onboard diesel engine, cutting both fuel consumption and emissions. This aligns with Transped’s goals for sustainability and efficiency.
Gino Gherri, Regional Sales Manager at Konecranes, emphasized the strong partnership with Transped and the crane’s suitability for industrial port environments. “The ESP.7 combines the versatility and power needed for specialized steel handling. Transped’s trust in our technology is a testament to the reliability and performance of our cranes,” he remarked.
The crane purchase is part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting™ initiative, a program aimed at enhancing the environmental benefits of their products while helping customers reduce carbon emissions. This initiative spans a spectrum of solutions, from optimizing diesel engines to fully electrified fleets, all aimed at driving efficiency and sustainability in material handling.
Konecranes’ commitment to innovation and customer-focused solutions has solidified its position as a leader in the material handling industry. By leveraging digital technology and advancing decarbonization efforts, the company continues to meet the evolving needs of clients like Transped, ensuring operational excellence and environmental responsibility.
