It’s an MPP Cargo Space Boom

The April 2021 Toepfer Multipurpose Shipping Index (TMI) is out.

According to Toepfer’s latest index, the demand for cargo space is booming and the number of cargo enquiries is going up. Large operators are trying to keep the tonnage they have and are acquiring more tonnage, causing only very few vessels to appear on the spot market.

Small operators who did not secure tonnage in the recent weaker times, have to pay high premiums to secure the ships they need to fulfil their obligations.

The average day rate to charter a geared 12,500 dwt vessel now stands at USD 8,092, which is an increase of 17.92% compared to this time last year and a 7.61% increase since last month.
