On April 10, 2025, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) received a new car carrier, TRITON HIGHWAY, with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. The vessel, constructed at the Marugame Headquarters of Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., is primarily fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a significant step towards sustainability in maritime transport.
A naming ceremony was held where Mr. Kazunari Kumakura, Chief Officer of the Purchasing Group at Toyota Motor Corporation, christened the vessel TRITON HIGHWAY. This vessel is not just another addition to “K” LINE’s fleet; it’s a testament to their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint.

LNG fuel is known for its ability to significantly reduce emissions. Compared to traditional fuels, LNG can cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25% to 30% and sulfur oxides (SOx) by almost 100%. Additionally, the vessel is equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, which further reduces nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions by 80% to 90%. The dual-fuel electronic control engine, “6S60ME-C10.5-GI-EGRBP” by MAN Energy Solutions, powers this eco-friendly vessel, making it a next-generation carrier that aligns with global environmental standards.
“K” LINE has also been diligent in enhancing fire safety measures. TRITON HIGHWAY is the first of their new car carriers to acquire the ClassNK notations for firefighting and electric vehicle safety. This brings the total number of “K” LINE car carriers with these notations to five, underscoring their dedication to safety and innovation.
In line with their Environmental Vision 2050 – Blue Seas for the Future, “K” LINE has set ambitious targets. By 2030, they aim to improve CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% compared to 2008 levels, surpassing the International Maritime Organization (IMO) target of 40%. Looking ahead to 2050, their goal is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To meet these targets, “K” LINE is exploring the introduction of low-impact fuels such as ammonia, hydrogen, bio-LNG, and synthetic fuels.
The vessel’s specifications are impressive. With a length overall (LOA) of 199.90 meters, a beam of 38.00 meters, a depth of 38.76 meters, and a draft of 9.30 meters, TRITON HIGHWAY has a gross tonnage of 77,509. It operates under the Japanese flag and is classified by ClassNK. Its speed is rated at 18.25 knots, ensuring efficient and timely transportation of vehicles.
