Kinetics and MOL Partner to Launch the World’s First Floating Data Center Platform

In a landmark move that blends maritime expertise with digital innovation, Kinetics and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly develop the world’s first integrated Floating Data Center Platform, with operations targeted to begin in 2027.

This collaboration aims to tackle a growing global problem: the delay in digital infrastructure development due to land constraints, energy shortages, and regulatory hurdles. As demand for data storage and cloud computing capacity surges, traditional land-based data centers are struggling to keep pace—especially in regions where access to land or power is restricted.

Offshore Data Centers: Scalable, Mobile, and Fast

At the core of this project is the conversion of used vessels into mobile data centers. These ships, retrofitted to support high-performance servers and communications systems, will be powered by dedicated Powerships from Karpowership, Kinetics’ parent company. These Powerships—floating power plants—can operate on multiple fuels such as LNG, and are already delivering over 10,000 MW of capacity across 19 countries.

Unlike land-based facilities that can take upwards of five years to become operational, these offshore data centers can be ready in just one year, offering a drastically reduced deployment timeline. They’re also mobile. If demand shifts from one market to another, the data center can relocate—no bulldozers or permits required.

The pilot project is expected to start with capacity between 20 to 73 MW, depending on configuration. Cooling will be managed using direct water intake from nearby seawater or rivers, significantly lowering energy consumption compared to conventional cooling systems.

Infrastructure Innovation from the Ocean Up

“This project represents a significant step toward our vision at Kinetics,” said Mehmet Katmer, CEO of Kinetics. “By pairing mobile power generation with floating data infrastructure, we are addressing critical market bottlenecks while enabling faster, cleaner, and more flexible digital capacity expansion.”

Tomoaki Ichida, Managing Executive Officer of MOL, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the company’s ambition to diversify into social infrastructure businesses while leveraging its shipping heritage. “Through the advancement of our technologies and services, we are committed to proactively responding to society’s evolving needs, including the imperative of environmental conservation,” he said.

MOL, known for its global shipping operations, is providing not only the vessels but also maritime logistics support and conversion expertise. The partnership underscores a broader industry trend: traditional maritime companies branching into adjacent industries like energy and digital infrastructure.

Floating Data Centers: Why They Matter

In the United States and elsewhere, power constraints are becoming a critical issue for data centers. Some projects face more than five-year wait times just to connect to the grid. Offshore data centers with self-contained power systems could bypass these bottlenecks entirely.

The mobility of vessel-based data centers also offers unique operational flexibility. These floating platforms can move closer to data demand centers or regions with lower operational costs. In some cases, they can even function while navigating—operating like a ship, but with terabytes instead of cargo.

Environmental impact is another key benefit. Repurposing used ships reduces the need for new construction materials and capital investment. Plus, seawater cooling systems drastically cut down on energy usage. A car carrier ship with approximately 54,000 m² of floor space could rival one of Japan’s largest terrestrial data centers in sheer capacity.

Next Steps: From MOU to Deployment

The timeline for the initiative is already in motion:

  • 2025: Finalization of design plans, regulatory alignment, and agreements with data center operators and port authorities.
  • 2026: Commencement of ship conversion work and permit acquisition.
  • 2027: Expected launch of the first operational offshore data center.

The companies aim to build a scalable model, with potential for replication across global markets. Discussions are already underway with stakeholders in the telecom, hyperscale, and maritime sectors.

In an era where data is the new oil, this floating data center could well be the next oil rig—roaming the seas to power the digital age.
