Digital platform targets fleet uptime and regulatory compliance

Konecranes has introduced a new modular lift truck platform designed to simplify fleet management and prepare terminal operators for upcoming European machinery and cybersecurity regulations.

The Finnish equipment manufacturer unveiled its Generation D platform during the TOC Europe exhibition in Hamburg on Tuesday, with diesel and electric reach stackers becoming the first products available under the new architecture.

The launch reflects a wider shift across container handling and cargo terminal operations where operators are balancing tighter emissions targets, cybersecurity requirements, and pressure to reduce maintenance downtime. For many terminal operators, equipment uptime can mean the difference between maintaining vessel schedules or facing mounting congestion costs.

Generation D uses a common modular architecture across equipment types, allowing customers to configure machines for different operational needs while keeping maintenance and software systems standardized across fleets.

“Konecranes” said the platform includes over the air software update capability, remote diagnostics, and open cyber secure digital architecture designed to integrate with terminal operating systems and third party applications.

Reach stackers remain central to container terminal operations

The first Generation D products include both diesel and fully electric reach stackers aimed at container handling applications.

The diesel models retain the company’s existing performance characteristics while introducing simplified maintenance systems intended to improve uptime predictability in heavy duty operations.

The electric reach stackers target operators seeking lower emissions without sacrificing operational performance. According to the company, acceleration can be up to 25% faster than comparable diesel machines, while different battery and fast charging combinations are designed to support either single shift or continuous operations.

For terminal operators managing mixed fleets, the modular approach could reduce complexity. A mechanic working on multiple machine types often faces different software systems, spare parts inventories, and diagnostic tools. Standardization changes that equation.

“This is about maximum performance with minimum complexity,” said Jeffrey Stokes, Director Product and Technology Management and Quality and Customer Satisfaction for Lift Trucks at Konecranes.

He said the platform is intended to increase uptime by simplifying fleet management and maintenance while lowering total ownership costs over the equipment lifecycle.

European and North American markets prioritized

The company said Generation D reach stackers will initially focus on European and North American markets where new machinery safety and cybersecurity regulations are approaching implementation.

The European Union’s increasing focus on connected industrial equipment security is pushing manufacturers to redesign digital infrastructure alongside mechanical systems. In practice, that means cargo handling equipment is now expected to meet cybersecurity requirements in much the same way as IT infrastructure.

Andreas Falk, Senior Vice President for Lift Trucks at Konecranes, said the platform was designed to support long term customer investment planning by allowing future software upgrades and feature additions without major hardware changes.

The company also confirmed it is expanding the Generation D platform beyond reach stackers to include forklifts along with empty and laden container handlers.

The launch forms part of the company’s Ecolifting roadmap, which includes renewable diesel, hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen related equipment development as ports and logistics operators continue pursuing lower emission cargo handling operations.
