Kuehne+Nagel Expands LTL Network for Healthcare Shipments in Europe with New Budapest Facility

In a move to bolster its healthcare logistics capabilities, Kuehne+Nagel has unveiled a 2,000 sqm temperature-controlled cross-dock in Budapest, Hungary. This facility is designed to serve as a strategic hub for less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments across Europe, complementing its established healthcare hub in Luxembourg. With the addition of Budapest, the company now operates two dedicated cross-docks aimed at optimizing healthcare supply chains, enabling shorter lead times and more efficient distribution.

The Budapest hub is fully compliant with Good Distribution Practice (GDP) standards, ensuring strict adherence to the sensitive requirements of healthcare products. Its temperature-controlled zones are set at 2-8°C and 15-25°C, making it capable of handling a wide range of medical and pharmaceutical goods. This state-of-the-art facility will significantly improve collection and distribution across Hungary and neighboring nations, such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and as far south as Greece and Bulgaria.

Joerg Woyke, Kuehne+Nagel’s Global Head of Healthcare Road Logistics, shed light on the decision to expand the LTL network. “Due to the sensitive and highly regulated nature of healthcare goods, businesses were initially hesitant to shift from full-truckload (FTL) to LTL services. We have earned their trust by demonstrating that our LTL services meet the same rigorous quality standards, while offering cost-efficiency and reduced carbon emissions,” he explained.

The shift from FTL to LTL has allowed healthcare companies to tap into cost-effective solutions without compromising quality, a critical factor for the heavily regulated industry. Kuehne+Nagel’s LTL services have also gained traction due to their reduced environmental impact, aligning with broader sustainability goals.

This initiative is part of Kuehne+Nagel’s Roadmap 2026, a strategic plan focused on expanding its healthcare services and infrastructure. The company has prioritized developing specialized solutions for healthcare logistics, underscoring the importance of maintaining the highest quality standards while optimizing operational efficiency. By integrating hubs like Budapest into its network, Kuehne+Nagel aims to ensure seamless cross-border healthcare logistics, addressing rising demand for timely and reliable transportation of medical goods.

The new Budapest facility not only reflects Kuehne+Nagel’s commitment to innovation but also its ability to adapt to the evolving needs of healthcare logistics. As the demand for healthcare-focused LTL services grows, the company is positioned to play a pivotal role in enhancing the supply chain for medical goods across Europe.
