For 50 years, Liebherr has been at the forefront of mobile harbour crane manufacturing, cementing its position as a global leader. Now, the company has reached a significant milestone with the production of its 2,000th LHM unit, a specially-configured LHM 600 for Marcegaglia.
The Liebherr manufacturing facility in Rostock, Germany, has rolled out the latest addition to its extensive fleet of mobile harbour cranes. This LHM 600, designed for Marcegaglia, a major player in the steel processing industry, boasts a lifting capacity of up to 154 tonnes and an outreach of 61 metres. The crane’s unique slewing platform design integrates maritime and regional aesthetics, reflecting the shared heritage of Rostock and Ravenna, where the crane will be deployed.

Marcegaglia will utilize the LHM 600 at the Port of Ravenna, enhancing its ability to handle steel products, including coils, billets, and plates. This marks the sixth Liebherr mobile harbour crane to join the company’s operations, further solidifying the longstanding partnership between the two industry leaders.
The LHM 600 is engineered to manage vessels up to New-Panamax size, making it a strategic asset for Marcegaglia’s port logistics. Featuring a hydrostatic drive and advanced control systems, the crane ensures precise, efficient, and seamless cargo handling. This contributes to a more flexible and streamlined logistics process, aligning with Marcegaglia’s operational goals.
Beyond its technical capabilities, the crane carries a distinctive artistic touch. The slewing platform design features a two-sided motif symbolizing the collaboration between Liebherr and Marcegaglia. On one side, the Italian heritage of Ravenna is depicted with a representation of the Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, dock workers engaged in port logistics, and an Italian inscription. The opposite side highlights Rostock’s industrial and maritime tradition with a lighthouse and German text. This handcrafted design underscores the blend of German engineering precision and Italian craftsmanship, encapsulating the long-standing relationship between the two companies.
Since introducing its first Liebherr mobile harbour crane in 2001, Marcegaglia has continued to invest in expanding its fleet. Over the years, five additional cranes have joined its operations, each contributing to the port’s evolving logistics landscape. The LHM 600 is now the largest in the Ravenna fleet, offering increased capacity and efficiency.

To commemorate this milestone, a formal handover ceremony is planned for the summer in Ravenna. Speaking on the occasion, Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales of mobile harbour cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “This milestone LHM 600 exemplifies our commitment to delivering pioneering solutions for our customers.”
With Liebherr’s global service network backing the new crane, Marcegaglia can rely on consistent maintenance and support. The LHM 600 not only reinforces Marcegaglia’s logistics capabilities but also stands as a testament to the enduring partnership between two industry leaders driven by a shared commitment to excellence.
