Maersk and Danone Join Forces to Slash Shipping Emissions with ECO Delivery Ocean

Maersk and Danone are now taking a critical step forward in tackling emissions in maritime logistics through a new partnership focused on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This collaboration leverages Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean service, which uses sustainably sourced fuels, including biodiesel and bio-methanol made exclusively from waste feedstocks. Through this initiative, Danone’s seaborne logistics operations will cut GHG emissions by over 40% compared to traditional fossil fuel-based shipping.

The partnership is part of Danone’s broader commitment to decarbonization. Jean-Yves Krummenacher, Danone’s Global Chief Procurement Officer, highlighted the significance of this alliance under Danone’s Partner for Growth program, noting that it aligns directly with their strategy of utilizing alternative fuels and multimodal transport to reduce environmental impact. “We are happy to partner with Maersk through Danone’s Partner for Growth program. The ECO Delivery Ocean product and its reduced greenhouse gas emissions align well with our decarbonization strategy,” Krummenacher said. The initiative represents a crucial move within Danone’s journey to net-zero, a target they pledged back in 2017, aligning their goals with the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Danone’s net-zero target by 2050 emphasizes its long-term commitment, while Maersk aims to reach net zero by 2040.

This venture positions both companies at the forefront of sustainable supply chains, addressing emissions at a time when the logistics sector faces mounting pressure to adopt cleaner practices. Emilio de la Cruz, Maersk’s Area Managing Director for South West Europe, emphasized that “The swift reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is at the core of both our companies,” adding that partnerships like these allow leaders in various industries to set a powerful example. Through initiatives like ECO Delivery Ocean, Maersk aims to provide effective tools for companies such as Danone to achieve sustainability in their logistics operations.

Beyond simply sea transport, this partnership extends to encompass comprehensive logistics support, including inland transport solutions and dedicated control towers to ensure operational continuity. By embracing these measures, Maersk and Danone seek to make decarbonization a tangible reality across the entire logistics chain. As part of Maersk’s commitment to net-zero pathways, its ECO Delivery Ocean initiative has paved the way for other companies to reduce their carbon footprints significantly.

This alliance symbolizes a notable shift in the maritime and logistics sectors toward sustainability, pushing boundaries in eco-friendly transport solutions and setting new standards for green shipping.
