Maersk Triples Its West Coast Latin America Shuttle, Betting on Nearshoring Cargo Surge

Maersk is replacing a single-vessel shuttle between Balboa and Posorja with a three-vessel network linking Mexico, Panama, and Ecuador, a move that signals rising confidence in nearshoring-driven cargo flows along the Pacific coast of the Americas.

The Danish carrier announced on July 30, 2026, that the new West Coast Shuttle will launch on September 20, 2026, with the 2,556 TEU vessel AS PALINA departing Posorja, Ecuador, on voyage 639N. The service will operate on a 21-day rotation using three vessels of approximately 2,500 TEU capacity each.

The upgrade expands Maersk’s previous Balboa–Posorja shuttle into a comprehensive regional loop. The new rotation calls at Posorja, Balboa, Manzanillo, and Lázaro Cárdenas, creating direct connections between Mexico’s major Pacific gateways and Ecuador’s primary port.

Maersk said the new configuration will provide faster transit times for Asia-origin cargo moving into South America. Southbound, cargo from Balboa reaches Manzanillo in seven days and Lázaro Cárdenas in nine days. The carrier will also transition its existing Guayaquil Feeder coverage into the enhanced shuttle network, consolidating regional services under one operational umbrella.

The launch coincides with a broader restructuring of Maersk’s Asia–West Coast Latin America offering. The updated AC2 service, effective August 11, 2026, will run a weekly rotation from Ningbo–Tangshan–Busan–Lázaro Cárdenas–Manzanillo. The West Coast Shuttle acts as the downstream connector, feeding cargo from those Mexican hubs into Panama and Ecuador.

Industry analysts view the move as a direct response to the accelerating shift of manufacturing capacity from Asia to Mexico, a trend known as nearshoring, which has tightened vessel supply on intra-Americas routes. By tripling shuttle capacity and adding Mexican port calls, Maersk is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the trans-Pacific cargo that now lands on Mexico’s west coast before moving southward.

The service also reflects Maersk’s Modular Network strategy, which breaks long-haul strings into interchangeable regional segments to improve scheduling flexibility and port coverage. Rather than operating a single Asia–South America string, the carrier uses the AC2 for the ocean leg and the West Coast Shuttle for regional distribution, a model that allows faster adjustments to demand shifts or port congestion.

For shippers, the immediate benefit is reduced transit time for containerized goods moving from Asia to Ecuador and Panama via Mexico. For competitors, the expanded shuttle raises the bar on service frequency and coverage in a trade lane that has seen limited new capacity injections in recent years.

Maersk has not disclosed deployment details for the remaining two vessels in the shuttle rotation, nor has it indicated whether further port additions are planned. The carrier said customers should contact local sales representatives for booking details.

The success of the West Coast Shuttle will likely be measured by how effectively it captures nearshoring-related cargo volumes and whether competitors respond with similar capacity upgrades on the Mexico–South America corridor.
