ARGENTIA, Newfoundland, Mammoet is handling some of the largest offshore wind monopile foundations delivered to Canada’s Port of Argentia, using a custom-engineered transport system designed to accommodate the increasing size and weight of next-generation foundations.
The heavy lifting and transport specialist said its team has been operating in challenging weather conditions at the Newfoundland port, where the monopiles arrived aboard a Boskalis heavy transport vessel before being moved to a nearby storage area.

Each monopile measures approximately 122 metres in length and weighs 2,473 tonnes. Following discharge at the quayside, the foundations are transported approximately three kilometres to a storage location, where they will remain until installation at an offshore wind project.
To manage the oversized cargo efficiently, Mammoet is using a bespoke jacking spacer and saddle system engineered specifically for transporting the latest generation of large-diameter monopiles. The solution is designed to improve handling efficiency while supporting the industry’s shift toward increasingly larger offshore wind foundations.

The project highlights the growing logistical complexity of offshore wind developments, where larger components require specialised transport equipment, engineered support systems and carefully planned port operations.
Port of Argentia has become an important logistics hub for offshore renewable energy projects in Atlantic Canada, supporting the staging, storage and assembly of major wind farm components.
